Bama has six million on the line with that season opener. That is a big loss if that game doesn't get played.

Source: SEC will discuss conference-only schedule soon (247Sports)
quote:
...the SEC remains steady with its plan to wait until late July or early August to make any decisions on the upcoming football season, which is threatened by the novel coronavirus COVID-19. The SEC's head coaches conducted a meeting with conference administrators, including commissioner Greg Sankey, on Thursday morning and were told at the time the conference will wait as long as possible before making any decisions on the football season, including whether to start on time or move to a conference-only schedule, a person involved in the call told 247Sports...

That is one third of the cost of tuition for 500ish UA athletes. That is a HUGE deal.
Football pays the bills for a lot of people.

This is bullshite. They are just kicking the can down the road at this point, hoping for a Hail Mary but just delaying the inevitable. Go ahead and just pull the plug on this mother fricker and follow the lead of the Ivies. Fall sports ain’t happening this year barring a miracle. Go ahead and start figuring out how football can be played in the spring alongside basketball and baseball because that’s the reality we’re facing.

I’m pretty sure the ship has sailed on that one.
The best we can hope for is an 8-10 game conference schedule with little to no fans. And I’m even pessimistic on that at this point.

A Spring season hurts the 2021 Fall season, plus a lot of guys like Najee, Moses, Leatherwood, Surtain, etc would probably just sit out the season if the draft isn't moved back.

PAC12 just went all conference games. Let’s end this charade and just call it off for fall sports.

Spring season hurts the 2021 Fall season,
I'd prefer the permanent shift, but would like New Years to be the CFB kickoff period. Fall Training periods (3 weeks between Aug-Sept or over summer classes; 3 weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas) would allow the entire new class to be on hand during the current academic school year.
Shift baseball to an Aug-Nov season... play a snowy Omaha post-season or open up Arizona and/or Florida for College WS.
NcAAB runs through the Fall and end with a winter break Holiday Madness tourney that ends just as CFB kicks off on NYE.

Screw that, football belongs in the fall.

i wish the sec, acc and big12 would flip off the bigten and pac12. go ahead with a full schedule. let those two conferences lose out. it's time to bow up and go on thru this mess, instead of dragging it out as long as possible.

Would much prefer football pushed back. Football was not meant to be played in August and early September heat in the Deep South. First game should be October at the earliest. A little cold weather on the back end of the season is preferable to the broiling heat early on. Have championship games on NYD, natty a week before the SuperBowl.

If you have it in spring, you have to contend with severe weather. If you have a stadium full of people and folks outside of the stadium and a tornado rolls up, then that’s a big liability.

The Tide vs. tornadoes: What happens when the stadium is in a storm's path?
Interesting read on the precautions taken, but bottomline is that all major venues account for severe weather and have plans in place to mitigate the risk. The risk remains, but there are lots of Spring sports played in large ballparks and arenas around the country that have to have a plan in place.
But, you are correct. It is a significant risk given the #s involved in a football stadium. The linked article mentions the 1983 Iron Bowl, which I never knew had a tornado pass right over and gameplay never even stopped.
I went to a lot of Royals games when living in NE Kansas. They had about the best setup between Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead. For a tornado evacuation from either venue, fans are ushered into large tunnels that run between each stadium. But, making the call early enough to execute the transition is obviously key.

I remember going to an Bama vs Ole Miss game at BDS and they issued a tornado warning for Tuscaloosa. They made us clear the stands and crowd into the tunnels and the concourse.
It was funny because Ole Miss had jumped out on Bama early and everything was going their way. Then the tornado warning happened. After about 45 minutes the game resumed. The Tide had turned and Bama whipped them soundly the rest of the way. I was at the game with my buddy who is a big Ole Miss fan. He was so pissed. He said even the good Lord was an Alabama fan and called a timeout for us to regroup.
