McNeese State Cowboys

It will be cold and the McNeese State Cowboys will be facing some kind of heat Friday night in their season opener at Alabama.

All-American left-hander Connor Prielipp will be on the hill for the Crimson Tide as McNeese gets a second chance at defending their Southland Conference tournament championship.

But neither the chill of a suspire winter nor the warmth of Prielipp's fastball will be anything like the adversity these Cowboys have faced simply to get here.

A year later … Cowboys return with 45-man roster

(Bama will have 34 on roster)

It’s been seven years since Alabama baseball made the NCAA tournament, five since playing in the SEC’s postseason.

Expectations, to be frank, haven’t been a rite of February around Sewell-Thomas Stadium so that’s what made this year interesting. Coach Brad Bohannon’s fourth Crimson Tide team has a taste of that hype … with a few caveats.

The 16-1 non-conference start to the pandemic-shortened 2020 season created a little buzz around the relatively dormant program. It was enough to crack a few pre-2021 rankings, peaking at No. 25 in the Baseball America version....

The interesting mix of expectations for Alabama baseball

Prielipp is the Crimson Tide’s sixth preseason selection in the history of college baseball’s top award

Prielipp Earns Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List Honors from USA Baseball

CARY, N.C. – Alabama's starting pitcher Connor Prielipp was selected to the 2021 Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List, USA Baseball announced on Thursday morning.

Prielipp is part of a group of 55 student-athletes featured on the Golden Spikes' preseason watch list. The sophomore becomes the sixth player in Alabama history to be named to the award's preseason watch list, the first since Mikey White in 2015.

The recognition adds to an already impressive preseason for Prielipp. The left-hander has already garnered first team All-America nods from four outlets including Collegiate Baseball News, D1Baseball.com, the NCBWA and Perfect Game USA.

I'm not a college baseball fan. But I would love to see Bama sweep LSU. Only because they really do care about it. It wouldn't be Saban hired at Bama or 21-Zereaux level melts, but they'd still be epic, and would last for days.

quote:

“I like our club a lot. It’s balanced,” Bohannon said of his fourth team in Tuscaloosa, Ala. “Last year, I thought our offense was ahead of our pitching -- not that our pitching wasn’t good. I just thought we had a really high-end offensive group. This year, I think we’re solid offensively, not necessarily great yet. I think we’re gonna play solid defense. We need to be more consistent. It’s got a chance to be better than that, but I think we will play solid defense.

“And I do like our pitching. We’ve got some real length to it. We finally have a real bullet on Friday night. I’m very confident in the back end. And I think if one or two guys can take a step forward -- and we certainly have several that have the talent -- maybe we could have an established Saturday and Sunday starter and match up in the pen and maybe that’s got a chance to be a plus. I’m not ready to slap ‘plus’ on it yet, and I’m talking by SEC standards.

“If I had to say what the strength is, I think it’s our intangibles, and that’s crazy to say when you have a group that’s only had 11 guys play in an SEC game. But man, we’ve got a bunch of kids that really focus well, at a high level. They’re really competitive and they’re really determined. And I think the term synergy comes to mind. I think we have a chance for the total package, to be better than simply the sum of the individual parts.”

I think CP gives up his first run today on a wild pitch due to the cold effecting his hands. We win 7-1 though. Diodatti hits a 3 run bomb.
