We can only hope Avery stays for 20 years. I can't even put into words how much I hope he does.

This is what I want the most. I want a HC who can consistently put a good team on the court and longetivity. Look at the likes of Wisconsin with Bo Ryan. He coached at Wisconsin for nearly 15 years. They had 6 tournament appearances before he got there in 01, 1 sweet 16 appearance, and had their 1st elite 8 appearance for the first time since the 1940s (wiki says they have 2 elite 8 appearances in the 1940s, but only 1 sweet 16 appearance in 2000). Though they made the final 4 in 2000, they weren't nearly as respected at they are now. That's what I hope for CAJ here.

One of the 'hype' videos released before the season had Johnson saying, "I wouldn't come to Alabama if I didn't think we could make it to the Final Four" (paraphrasing)

He's the thing, even if CAJ does what Wimp did, he's in a different era. While we as Bama fans may not expect that kind of success now, the bar for Bama Basketball will continue to rise. If CAJ sustains the kind of success he's currently having and improves on that, he'll have to exceed expectations the following years. So right now, even though we say "just making the sweet 16 will be nice", eventually we'll start getting weary and start having doubts if he will ever get over the hump and get Alabama to the elite 8.

I get that it is a different era and unless you're in your 40s, you don't really remember Bama basketball being at that level. I brought up Wimp because I'd argue it was harder to sustain success in SEC basketball when Wimp was here. Teams not named Kentucky were making it to the final 4 and every team in the conference made the NCAAs at least once. If it could happen then, it can certainly happen today.

Oh I wasn't arguing your point, just kinda adding that if CAJ does in fact have success here, he's going to have to overcome the pressure of having to exceed expectations of his own success.

I doubt we'll ever fire a HC who is competing for sweet 16s, but I also don't doubt that if he does get Alabama to that level, the frustration of never getting over the hump will grow within our fan base and question if he's the right guy.

Nearly impossible to predict

Our bigger issue would be a blue blood like UNC stealing him away. Or the NBA

Hopefully he'll do like coach Saban. Ignore other job offers and want to build a dynasty and become one of the greatest of all time. I know that's hard to do, but if anyone can do it, it's Avery Johnson!

Saban moved around alot though..... I'll take a Sarah Patterson, takes the job, makes us a power and then stays for nearly 40 years.

I hope we're not as stupid as like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and fire Tony Dungy right before it gets good, dooming everything.

A definite possibility, particularly the NBA. But there's a couple things in our favor. The Blue bloods typically hire alum. I expect that from schools like unc and duke. Avery has also had two NBA jobs. He knows how fickle teams can be when it comes to firing a coach. Unless a team has a future hof player, he knows the chance of getting fired is very high.

If we have the type of success we are beginning to expect, we'll need to continue to invest in the basketball program on a blue blood level. Facilities will need to continue to be improved. Even though Bama isn't a basketball state, the boosters love a winner, and will invest if we become an elite team.

I hope and pray every single day that Alabama will get a new basketball arena. I think an arena around 12,500 would be perfect.

I would absolutely love this but I would really miss Coleman. I love going there. I don't know what it is but I love everything about it except the inside and that's where it matters. Too dark, so big that our fans can't fill it up, too old and outdated. We really need a new arena if we're serious about basketball. We have a new coach, we're getting some good players now, now or really soon is the time for a new arena

Coach AJ has little to work with on this roster, yet he has this team on the ncaa bubble.

It's truly amazing how he gets the maximum outta these guys.

He is. It's much easier to make the tournament now. We should have higher expectations than we did with Wimp.

BOOM MFers!!!

I haven't been this excited about Bama basketball since Wimp was around.

We're going to be hell when he gets some players with more talent than what we have. No offense to the current players because they play their arse off and never quit.

Just wow!

CAJ brought in some guy from Tampa named Todd Collins before the Florida game. Of course on Valentines Day, he's attending the Gymnastics meet and supporting them.

Go look at this guys twitter. He all about supporting the other programs. My guesses is that he will be at many baseball and softball games this year. May even venture over to the right field
