So Anoma got kicked off at Houston and now Alfano is indefinitely suspended at Colorado. Sheesh. I don't know if this actually validates them leaving here or makes me wonder how we missed on these personalities in recruiting (or if they were so talented we just looked past it).

I wonder if WillyT is going to report this to the SEC Rant?

My guess would be that upon having the scholly space late in the cycle, we took a shot on them given their upside. I'm sure that they were on short leashes and it showed. The end result does at least have the benefit of clearly indicating to the rest that it's "my way or the highway" from Saban. Nothing much lost on our end so long as 1) we didn't turn down a good recruit in favor of them, and 2) they were ousted before hurting team chemistry/culture.

I thought the same thing when I read this. Enoma, I believe, has some issues related to a learning disability. He at least tried to stick it out a year.
Alfano appears to be a lazy arse stoner. I think all the assisant coaching turnover has hurt our player evaluations the last few years.

Y’all don’t know the whole story. His aunt’s neighbor has a cold and he’s taking it really hard.

Wasn’t Alfano one our earliest commits that cycle?

Perhaps, no clue. I didn't mean that we let them jump on board at the end. I meant that maybe they were allowed on board as our numbers never got tight.
It certainly could have been big whiffs in evaluation. One of them had huge red flags beforehand, though. I don't think the other did as much.

I hate to say this because he's young but I can see the same fate awaiting for Scooby Carter.

This shows that they were the problem, not our football culture. That said, how the heck did we miss on their piss poor character issues while recruiting them for 2-3 years?

The next recruiting evaluation I do will be my first, but I can think of a couple of things that could impact how we (Alabama staff and coaches) view recruits, and why things can go south for them when they get on campus:
1) We rely on coaches, teachers, parents and others to give us their opinion(s) of the player. These folks have only seen the player in one type of environment -- their home / familiar surroundings.
2) When a player gets away from that familiar, structured environment -- often for the first time in their lives -- they have more personal freedom than they've ever had. Now, if they want to (for example) smoke weed instead of going to class, there's no one immediately available to tell them not to do that.
I understand that we (Alabama) have one of the best support systems in place for student-athletes in the country, but sometimes once a person starts going down the wrong path, it's difficult -- if not impossible -- to get them back on the right path.
You see this with college freshmen all over the place. It's just more noticeable (and more highly publicized) when it happens to an athlete.
