SEC to allow additional scheduling flexibility (247Sports)
quote:
The Southeastern Conference was ravaged by postponements related to COVID-19 this week, as four of its seven scheduled games won’t be played. That led the conference to add Dec. 19 as a playing week, but the league reportedly has added another scheduling quirk.
SEC Presidents will now allow teams with a game impacted on the same weekend to schedule a game with one another instead of idling, 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello confirmed. However, there are a couple of rules here.
Rematches are not permitted and the rule only applies to scheduled games. New games are not allowed to be added, meaning the game already has to be on the schedule. The decision would have to be made by Monday.
An example would be Alabama and Auburn this week. Both had games postponed due to outbreaks in their opponents’ program. Under the new rule, the two would have been able to decide this past Monday to play the Iron Bowl this weekend...
Note: It appears LSU waited a week to reveal their number of positive tests and contact tracing quarantines, making it impossible for UA and any of its scheduled opponents to decide by Monday to move their game to this weekend. I suspect that's why LSU delayed reporting their situation.

From the SEC:
The Southeastern Conference will utilize December 19 as a playing date for football games rescheduled during the 2020 season due to the impact of COVID-19 and has established parameters that allow for the adjustment of game opponents as late as five days prior to competition, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey announced Friday.
As of Friday, all games planned for November 21 will be played as scheduled. All games currently scheduled to be played after November 21 are subject to weekly evaluation in order to reschedule games that have been postponed during the 2020 season.
“It has been a goal of the SEC to play a complete football schedule provided we maintain a healthy environment for student-athletes and everyone around our football programs,” said Sankey. “The added flexibility of a December 19 playing date for teams that do not qualify for the SEC Football Championship and the ability to adjust opponents on five-day notification provide a greater opportunity for our schools to play a full schedule of games in 2020.”
December 19 is the date of the SEC Football Championship Game to be played in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Teams that do not qualify for the championship game would be eligible to play games on December 19 that are rescheduled during the remaining weeks of the 2020 football season.
In addition, the Conference office may revise the weekly football schedule up to 9 pm ET/8 pm CT on the Monday prior to Saturday games for the purpose of maximizing the number of games available to be played. The games subject to rescheduling would only be those on a team’s original schedule and against opponents that a team has not yet played.

Thanks for posting TS. I read both articles, to me, it confirms this game will be cancelled.
11/21 games will be played as scheduled, no movement
Bama/UF play in the SECCG 12/19
Lsu/UF play 12/12
Sankey says that he wants to play all 10 games scheduled at some point in the season. I am pretty sure he had a 1 off in that plan as well.
Hope Bama finishes out the remaining schedule go into SECCG 9-0 and on to 18.

I think the game gets played, the SEC will adjust the schedule. Saban said it himself this week that he preparing for a schedule change.
Bama/LSU likely gets played on 12/5. Bama/Arkansas gets pushed to 12/12 and LSU/Ole Miss to 12/19.
It's a pretty easy scheduling fix.

More likely?:
UA @ LSU rescheduled to 11/21
UK @ UA rescheduled from 11/21 to 12/12
LSU @ AR rescheduled from 11/21 to 12/19
(LSU quarantines end Mon. 11/16)
It seems to me the SEC should prefer UA @ LSU on 11/21. It follows game prep already done and avoids UA having 2 consecutive road games (LSU-12/5 & AR-12/12) prior to the SEC-CG on 12/19 (team travel increases Covid-19 risk).

I might be reading this wrong, but based on that statement, the games scheduled on 11/21 will be played as scheduled.

Good point. I missed that nugget.
Maybe the SEC has already rescheduled some 11/21 games to be announced Mon. If not, then UA @ LSU on 12/5 does seem to be more likely.

It could end up working out if they do this. Whoever LSU's opponent is on December 5, they can play them on December 19. That way Alabama can play Arkansas on December 12 and Florida can play LSU that same day.

so, if that game is moved to 12/19, the LSU Ole Miss game can't also be played 12/19.

The A&M cancellation is the first time that the math hasn't worked anymore for at least 1 team in terms of games left vs available dates.
Texas A&M is in a spot now where you have to look at their game with Tennessee as an "if they don't play in the SECCG" game. There are 3 non-SECCG weekends left for A&M to play 4 games, and while I'm only a lowly accountant nerd I know that math don't work.
So, because you still want A&M to get 10 games in for a possible playoff birth, you re-arrange things to have them and Tennessee be a TBD game on 12-19 IF A&M doesn't go to Atlanta.
November 21
- Alabama vs Kentucky
- Arkansas vs LSU
- Auburn vs Tennessee
- Vanderbilt vs Florida
- Georgia vs Mississippi St
- South Carolina vs Missouri
November 28
- Alabama vs Auburn
- Florida vs Kentucky
- Ole Miss vs Mississippi St

December 5
- Arkansas vs Alabama
- Auburn vs Texas A&M
- Florida vs LSU
- Georgia vs Vanderbilt
- Kentucky vs South Carolina
- Mississippi State vs Missouri
- BYE : Ole Miss, Tennessee
December 12
- LSU vs Alabama
- Auburn vs Mississippi State
- Tennessee vs Florida
- Ole Miss vs Texas A&M
- Missouri vs Vanderbilt
- BYE : Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina
December 19
- SEC Championship Game (for argument sake Alabama vs Florida)
- Ole Miss vs LSU
- Tennessee vs Texas A&M (if A&M not in SECCG)
The only real movements are Tennessee/Florida moves from 12/5 to 12/12 and Florida/LSU moves to 12/5. Alabama/LSU is then scheduled for 12/12. Texas A&M/Ole Miss is scheduled for 12/12 as it is a divisional game, and Texas A&M/Tennessee is moved to 12/19 if necessary.

Things are going to get crazy if some more games get canceled soon. Which seems inevitable

Yea, they've basically reached the limit at this point.

Can't they just push Bama/Arkansas to 12/12 and have Bama/LSU on the 5th? No Florida game gets moved then.
Bama would have to lose twice for A&M to make the SEC Championship Game, so A&M/Ole Miss on the 12th and A&M/Tennessee on the 19th.
LSU would play Ole Mis on the 19th.

Would it be possible for Texas A&M to drop the Ole Miss game and play an East team that they arent scheduled to play and isnt in contention for the division? I feel like the most important thing is making sure the teams at the top are all playing a full 10 games

I can't believe the Iron Bowl is in 2 weeks.
Just feels weird as hell - no Alabama/LSU yet, no Auburn/Georgia 2 weeks before.

No point in playing LSU I hate to say it. Just win out and go to the ship.
