Alabama - Michigan : Advanced Box Score

BAMA 35, MICHIGAN 16

* Fun fact: Mac Jones had a better passer rating against Mich than Justin Fields and a better rating against Auburn than Joe Burrow
* (pretty bad on PDs, though)
* Mich ran the ball better than I expected, but ... 2.6 yds/pass att on PDs...

Am I reading this right? Not one of our defensive linemen had a single tackle?

I'm not sure that lists every single tackle or just the top 8-10 or however many are on there. But none had more than 2.5 for sure.

Yep - but almost 0 big plays and we held in the red zone.

Not my cup of tea but with this group of young kids up front it's a success.

Yet Mac Jones threw 2 pick 6s vs Auburn.

Passing Downs (not dumb)

I believe they are classified as 2nd and 7+ or 3rd and 5+

Basically downs where the defense is expecting pass, which of course theoretically makes passing the ball harder than on SD (standard downs) where the pass or run is available.

I thought Bama closed their gaps and played much better in the second against the run, but there is no doubt Michigan should have run the ball more. Stats even say they should have given it more to Charbonnet, instead of giving a guy that finished with less then 3.5 YPC. Understandably, they had to get away from the run a little bit to play catch up, but there were some opportunities.

Michigan had a 13-play drive going into the 4th quarter that resulted in a punt because of a big sack by Shane Lee on first down. You have to give credit to Alabama for stepping up and making big plays, but Michigan definitely put themselves in position to make this closer.

I hope we get more consistency and intensity from the front seven. Too many times this year the defense made average QBs look decent because they didn't play the run well. When you're in 2nd or 3rd and manageable, it's much easier for the offense to dictate what they want to do. Alabama finished 37th this year against the run. It used to be tough for offenses to move on Alabama because they were always facing 3rd and 10 or longer.

Seemed like the front 7 was constantly just still/not moving for a 1/2 second after the ball was snapped causing them to let the offensive line get off the ball cleanly over and over again. Just very little explosiveness off the ball. Seemed like it was taking too much time for them to process pre-snap and post snap movement. Somewhat understandable for the young guys, but still incredibly frustrating to watch. Sometimes I wanted to tell them to just fricking blast off the ball and hit someone even if you mess up.

Cool. We will play maybe 1 game next year as imposing as that defense in Jordan Hare
