I don't see why he would take the Syracuse job, he isn't from NY he moved there because he got hired by Buffalo. He is from Wisconsin and coached HS basketball in Michigan.

UNC would be my biggest worry, have to think Roy Williams hangs it up in the next couple of years.

Lucky for us UNC has a few options before looking at Oats (Wes Miller and the Stanford coach).

I'm not too worried about it, there's no doubt we would match anything he gets offered anywhere else if he keeps winning like he is. He is 3 or 4 really good years away from having a good enough resume that the blue bloods would come calling anyway.

True, UK fans didn't want Donovan until he won his first NC at UF.

I think tomorrow is gonna be a sneaky tough game for us.

Stewart and Molinar are really damn good. And Tolu Smith and Ado are the 1st team that can truly test us inside with no Bruner. I ultimately don’t think they can keep up with us but I think they will give us a game the 1st 30 or so minutes

IDC if we have to divert some funds from somewhere else.

They best throw everything at Oates to keep him if some team comes calling. Big raise and new arena. Let him help with input design.

I think it was posted earlier, but Boeheim doesn’t like Oats. Guess it was something Oats said

When Buffalo beat Syracuse, Nate said something like our players play harder, are more talented and are better coached

Alabama deserves mention as third-best team in the country

quote:

Alabama is playing some of the best basketball in the country right now. A 105-75 victory over LSU on Tuesday was the latest in its current eight-game win streak, the last seven of which were SEC games.

The Crimson Tide were largely an afterthought at the start of the streak, finishing the season’s first month with a 4-3 record. They didn’t have a great win and lost at home to a solid Western Kentucky team, which a program with Alabama’s expectations should still win.

Yet Nate Oats’ squad has turned their season around in a big way since. This group has found a groove in their five-out system, spreading out opposing defenses and utilizing a drive-and-kick offense. While it’s worth mentioning that Alabama’s defense (No. 10 in AdjD) is ranked higher than its offense (No. 13), it has been the scoring prowess that has been the driving force behind the surge. However, the Tide aren’t necessarily doing anything different from their first seven games.

According to ShotQuality, Alabama was expected to win each of the three games it lost based on the, well, quality of shots it took. Those shots just didn’t go in.

Alabama has been slowly rising up the rankings during its win streak, only checking it at No. 18 in the latest AP poll. That 4-3 start is the reason many are so hesitant to fully believe in this squad. But if you take ShotQuality’s information into account and assume Alabama fulfilled those projected results — or even if they lost a game because, well, it’s college basketball — the hype around this team feels a lot different.

The biggest topic this season asks who is the third best team in the country. We know Gonzaga is No. 1, Baylor is No. 2, there’s a GIANT tier gap, and then whoever checks in at No. 3 on a given week. Villanova currently holds that spot because it didn’t play for a month and, therefore, didn’t lose for a month, but the Wildcats have shown plenty of flaws. Iowa’s lack of defense gives them a clear ceiling, Tennessee and Illinois have fallen off the map, and Michigan looked the part before being blown out by Minnesota.

Is it possible that Alabama is the team we all thought Michigan was this time last week?

They’re one of only five teams that rank in the top 13 nationally in both offensive and defensive efficiency (Gonzaga, Baylor, Michigan, Virginia) and have played a top 25 schedule so far. They’ve routinely proven themselves against excellent competition, providing more of a resume than a lot of the teams ahead of them that we think are good.

I don’t know if Alabama is really the third best team in the country right now, and it may not necessarily matter with Gonzaga and Baylor’s dominance. But you also can’t make a strong argument that the Crimson Tide aren’t the third best team in the country with the way they’re playing.

I’m just not sure I agree here. The offense is undoubtedly playing better... more movement, finishing drives, shooting extremely well. But to me, the most noticeable change from OOC to now is the defensive intensity. The article even states that the AdjD is better than the AdjO right now. They team has played excellent defense for the past month, which has set up a lot of opportunities for the offense to be successful.

Josh Primo looks to be coming into his own as a freshman Alabama shooting guard. He came into Alabama as a five-star prospect according to 247Sports and has had a couple breakout games as of late. He was a pivotal character in the Tides tough win over Auburn.

I love the shooting of Primo as a niche skill. Look for his percentage from behind the arc to continue to improve. He is skilled all around as well and has slick body control and a top notch feel for the game.

As he adjusts to the physicality of the game and also develops his own physicality, look for him to become a more assertive and dominant player.

And what about the play of Alabama? Nate Oats has developed an identity and system of play that the team is aggressively and confidently executing.

This doesn’t appear to be a fluke to me. All but one of Alabama’s SEC wins has been of a dominant nature. They can match your two’s with three’s, and they defend. Right now they are the class of the SEC.

ALABAMA ISN’T JUST ABOUT FOOTBALL ANYMORE

quote:

Alabama will always be known primarily as a football school, especially after Nick Saban led the Tide to the program’s 18th national championship earlier this month, the sixth for Saban at the school.

Yet watch out for Nate Oats and the men’s basketball team.

After being picked fifth in the SEC this season, No. 18 Alabama is 12-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the SEC.

The first-place Tide have won eight straight and in their last three games have beaten Kentucky by 20, Arkansas by 31 and LSU by 30. That’s a total of 81 points. Both the Kentucky and LSU games were on the road.

ESPN’s Lunardi has the Tide as a 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Alabama has four players averaging in double-figures in John Petty Jr. (14.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg), Villanvoa transfer Jahvon Quinerly (13.3), Jaden Shackelford (13.1) and Herb Jones (12.6, 5.7 rpg), while Canadian freshman Josh Primo is close (8.6 ppg, 3.4 rpg).

Yale grad transfer Jordan Bruner (7.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg) suffered a meniscus tear in mid-January and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Still, that hasn’t set Alabama back at all.

Alabama isn’t just about football anymore.

What’s the highest seed Bama has ever received? 2?

Just the thought of being included in the conversation for a 1 seed is exciting. If we actually got it, I’d go full blown BOG. Have they indicated how the tickets sales (if there are any) are going to work for the NCAAT this year? I love the first weekend of the tournament anyway, so I can only imagine the excitement if we were playing with a chance to make a run. Could definitely spend a weekend in Indy watching that.

I wouldn't know how to watch the tourney if Bama wasn't playing the best team in the country in the first game or two.

Yeah I'm too young to have any significant memories of Wimp's best teams, so I honestly have zero frame of reference for approaching a basketball postseason with expectations rather than hopes.

I suppose you could count Gottfried's 2002 fiasco.
