You never say never with these things but I'd be pretty shocked if JQ wasn't playing at Alabama next season.

I’d be shocked if any of these kids didn’t return.

It’s good for them to get feedback.

One of the guys on BOL says JQ is the only other one who will declare because Oats encouraged them too and Both will be back.

He isn’t Hank or Tim but he is a regular poster who was right about Langston

I don’t think Shack is an NBA player at all. Even after four years, let alone right now.

Jasmine Walker Taken Seventh Overall in 2021 WNBA Draft

Jasmine Walker becomes the first Alabama women’s basketball player selected in the first round of the WNBA draft since 2000

She is the first Alabama player selected in the WNBA draft since 2005, and the first Crimson Tide standout drafted in the first round since Tausha Mills was taken second overall to the Washington Mystics in 2000.

Bama's Walker was drafted #7 in WNBA Draft. Is that an all time high for the program?

I was gonna say maybe Dominique Canty but looked it up and she was the 29th pick overall and a third rounder. But was runner up in Rookie of the Year. Also noticed she is now 44!! Jeez where has time gone?

Have learned that Texas A&M basketball forward Emanuel Miller has entered the transfer portal. Led the team in scoring and rebounding this past season.

Meyer's Mailbag: Tamar Bates, Villanova and Nate Oats (247)
quote:

What do you think of Nate Oats’ quick roster overhaul, and do you believe his coaching philosophy is more about recruiting appeal than Xs and Os? Curious to hear what you think of how his style applies to late-game situations in the half court.

squintin tarantino @yourneighborace

It is always impressive to have a currently No. 8 incoming recruiting class. Nate Oats is recruiting at a high level nationally. There is no doubt that his coaching philosophy places an enormous value on recruiting. You have to have talented players with a mentality that will fit into and drive a winning culture.

I’d say recruiting overrides Xs and Os in his coaching philosophy, but it isn’t a simple dichotomy. His Xs and Os are intertwined with his recruiting. Not only is it a fun way to play with the freedom to take the first open shot and the focus to defend. It is also arguably the right way to play. It is definitely the right way to play given the approach of attracting the best players and getting the most out of those players. That is the type system top level prospects on the whole desire to play in.

As for late game situations in the half court, any coach despite the system should have special action to run in the crunch. Even a team like Virginia that plays a more methodical, probing half court game can’t expect to score with that approach in late game situations. There has to be at least a tweak or a go-to action that has been meticulously drilled on.

The key for an uptempo, quick to shoot team like Alabama is to spend extra practice time on its late game action. A distinction needs to be drawn between the mindset between flow of the game play and end of the game play. Number one get the ball to the right scorer. Number two value the ball more. And number three make sure you are getting the reps under pressure in practice in order to execute in the game.

Number one-b, become great at shooting free throws.

I assume when they get feedback, it's telling them if they might get drafted, and what part of their have needs to improve. That's good info to have for off-season training.

Who do you guys expect to end up being the better college player, Davison or Sexton?

I think Sexton will definitely end up with better stats since he was a one man band for us that season, but I’m hopeful Davison will be a better player/distributor. He’s got a lot more weapons around him, a better system for his skill set, and he won’t be asked to be mr everything.

Pretty much sums up how I feel. Sexton was forced to do things that JD won't be asked to do just because the situations are completely different.

Yeah I think JD will try to play a lot of hero ball early on because it's what he is used to, but eventually he will start to transition to more of a facilitator role and pick his battles in terms of attacking the rim.

Better regardless of situation and stats? Close but Sexton is a very safe bet. He had two of the best moments in our program's entire history in his one year, and the dude was just different. He had an unmatched mentality and work ethic. Mentally, he reminded me of Michael Jordan. The dude exuded confidence at a level I've never seen before at the college level. I think Davison is more athletic, more skilled, a better PG and likely a better pro prospect, but basketball is a game of work ethic and confidence. While I don't think he lacks in those areas, Sexton had/has an all-time great level of work ethic and confidence.
