Alabama baseball signee selected in top-10 of MLB draft
LINK

quote:

An Alabama baseball signee was selected early in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft Monday night.

The San Diego Padres took C.J. Abrams, who signed with the Crimson Tide in November, with the No. 6 overall pick.

Abrams, a left-handed-hitting shortstop from Georgia, batted .431 with three home runs and 27 RBI in 40 games as a senior at Blessed Trinity Catholic High School and was named the Gatorade state player of the year for Georgia.

quote:

The projected signing bonus for the No. 6 overall pick is $5.7 million.

“Coming from Georgia, it’s a long way out there," Abrams said of San Diego during an interview on MLB Network. "The weather’s nice. The grinding starts now.”

The last paragraph confirms he is gone.

This is why I just can’t follow men’s college baseball. The best players never make it to school - unlike b-ball - where they at least have to play for 1 year (or three in football).

I honestly wish and think it’s stupid football and basketball isn’t the same way. Pretty selfish and stupid to force a kid to go to college that doesn’t want to be there. It’s a distraction to the class and the reason we hear so much about paying the players. Let the kids go pro if that’s their only goal. The NCAA needs to work on this instead of touchbacks...but too much money is being made

That’s not exactly a great comparison. Nearly 100% of these MLB draftees won’t see the majors for another 3-4 years.

And for that matter only a handful of 18 year olds are ready for the NBA.

And there’s not a single high school kid ready for the NFL.

I do see your point and I get that it can’t be done today and kids develops at a different rate, but there has to be a better alternative than to force them into classes they do not want to be in and profit off them.? That’s why I feel so strongly about making a farm league for them to developer and focus on football only.. Europe has already done this for basketball and it will only grow.

The rate it’s going they are going to ya e to pay these college kids.. then title IX will show it’s face and schools will go broke. They need to figure out something before it gets to that point

The thing about this kid is the early position of his pick (in the top 10) and the signing $$ he’ll get. Even if it takes him 3-4 years that is big chunk of change (not including his regular salary - around $6K/month for AA and $10K/mo. for AAA) for the kid to live on.

I’d bet on my talent for that kind of cheddar at 18-19 years old. You can always go back to college.

Sorry, but you are way off on how things work. It's not the schools that force kids to come there, the fact of the matter is the NFL for example does not want them.

They can sit at home for 3 years, they can pay for all their training and everything themselves, and then enter the draft. They go to the schools because it provides things that money just can't really buy.

You're exactly right. They aren't ready for the NFL out of High School and the NFL knows it. Not being physically or mentally ready is a sure fire way to get injured, sometimes severe. That's a liability that the NFL doesn't want.

College football is basically a free minor leagues for the NFL.

That's why I have way more respect for professional soccer.

As for op, did we know this kid was going to be a top ten prospect. If so, dunno wtf the baseball HC was thinking.

We're college fans. We want the best talent to play in college.

It doesn't hurt these little shits to actually try to learn to think for a year or two while they recieve the best training in the world. Do you honestly think some semi-pro dirtbag league will prepare them at the level we do?

Poor exploited yoots. Blah blah blah. Why don't we just start training them at 6 years old like the Spartans did. Forget reading and writing. As long as they can grunt out the play call and spell "x" and "o", forget about actually trying to make them into complete, well rounded adults.

Get off your high horse.

That’s the chance you take in baseball. You have to recruit well, but not too well or MLB drafts them right out from under you. And Bama needs to recruit REALLY well right now.

For what it's worth, Gary Harris said on TI that Bohannon has hardly been seen since the season ended because he's hit the recruiting trail pretty hard.

JK Scott freshman numbers lead me to believe differently. The guys who take contact, probably are indeed less ready for the nfl.

It’s possible a punter could do it. But it would be an extremely rare occurrence.
