An 8 team playoff with committee seeding accomplishes these things

1) it gives the east, west, north and south an emotional stake in the entire season.

2). It tips the hat to the best teams by seeding them higher and rewarding them with a home playoff game.

3) it multiplies the number of huge games by a factor of four

4) It keeps most of the great players playing until the end.

5) It probably explodes revenues and increases tv ratings.

And I think another thing it will do is it will generate interesting and historic games like, in an occasional down year, an Alabama team having to go to Columbus or vice versa. Or USC having to go to Athens. Or Texas having to go to Clemson.

But it has to been seeded. If a great 11-1 SEC runner up has to travel to Eugene to play an 8-3 crap Oregon team that won the inferior Pac 12, then I pass.

Frack conference champs. Not always the best teams - Bama has proven that again and again. And we’ve all seen 2-3 loss conference champs in other conferences before too.

Not sure what to do, but the top two seeds (top 4 if a larger playoff) need to skip the first round to have some type of other advantage - make the season mean something.

I prefer only 6 teams - with 4 battling it out to get to the Final Four.

I think we’ll see the regular season cut back by a game or two (no more Southern Miss) too.

You all are being purposely obtuse.

First of all I don’t think you can be a Bama fan and also want whats “best” for CFB. Alabama being this good is bad for the sport. The playoffs should be for the teams that deserved to get in. There aren’t even 8 teams that deserve in every year.

You want to talk about excitement? The majority of the games are going to be blowouts. You already see it with the current playoffs because there are 1-3 teams that are above the rest. And most of the 8 teams or whatever, will be all big name teams most year. So more of the same people have been complaining about.

People (like you) also think they’ll go the conference champ route but I doubt that. Why risk putting a 3 loss PAC 12 team in just because they won their conference when they can put in another SEC or BIG10 team? Those PAC 12 teams don’t bring in a lot of ratings. If they expand they’ll likely do it like a poll.

The NFC east isn't equal to the AFC east. But the NFC east champ goes to the playoffs.

There’s still FAR more parity in CFB. You rarely see 30 point blowouts in the NFL between supposedly top teams like you see with CFB. The NFC and AFC east teams are a lot closer then the PAC 12 and SEC champs many years

Maybe it's just media spin.

Probably

I’m not saying it’s impossible but I’ve seen nothing to indicate it’s guaranteed to happen

If it does expand it sure as hell shouldn’t be 12 teams. 6 is as much as it should go. No conference champ auto bids either.

Coach Bryant on Playoffs

I am a Bama fan. This would be better for Bama.

Big Fish Big Pond v Big Fish Small Pond

Coach Bryant was always for playoffs. He always complain that we have given the whole of January to the NFL as far as publicity and attention.

I think the same way. College Football is NOT a farm league for the NFL. Grab as much time and attention as possible.

Sure the west coast isn't as big on college football. But there is still a large market there and a great history.

Keep it at 4 teams.

Or go back to 2 year in and year out you barely have 3 teams worthy let alone 4 or more. The semifinals and, more times than not, the final, is a blow out. All adding more undeserving teams will do is add more blowouts.

Your original comment said this

Bama/Clemson/OSU dominance is killing college football.

That’s one of the reasons why you want the playoffs. To give other teams a chance at relevancy.

You can’t be for both

But there is still a large market there

For the NFL yes but not much for CFB. Even schools like USC don’t seem to care as about the sport as much as they used to.

There is no reason to expand the playoffs. Especially not to 8 or even 12 teams.

The 4 team format hasn't produced the same excitement as the BCS. I'm not opposed to trying something new.
