What do you think?

1. Safety - Everyone seems to agree that Hellams and Battle have tons of talent and are mature, but starting 2 young, inexperienced safety in the SEC can be scary as hell.

2. OLB - Who proves to the staff the ability to set the edge and get to the QB, or some combination of both? Tons of young options here, will be interesting who steps up.

3. Defensive End - Similar to OLB, lots of young kids - some who played a lot earlier than expected last year (Young, Eboigbe) and some newbies with tons and tons of talent (Anderson).

My 4th would probably be QB, but I think that really only ends up coming into play in 2-3 games out of the season.

EDIT - Kicker isn't make or break because it will always be terrible.

Based on the last few season?

Orthopedic surgeon
Rehabilitation Specialist
Clairvoyant

Clairvoyant may actually be #1. If they do their job you won’t need the other two.

1. Agree with safety. I think we have some early growing pains here but close strong.

2. DL. Will just list all 3 positions here. Lot of room for improvement here but we will almost certainly get better with the same guys coming back for the most part. We really need to be elite here if we expect an elite overall defense.

3. TE. These guys are often overlooked but they can be difference makers in both phases of the offense. I think we may be ok here but we brought in a transfer for a reason.

Disagree on kicker. Reichard is going to be very good. I thought Daniel Wright was slated to be a starter at safety ? Saban usually starts older guys in the secondary. I do think that Hellams has a great upside. Finding receivers other than Smith and Waddle will be key. The defense as a whole has to get better. No two ways about it.

The 3 groups that could make or break this year's team?

ILB- we have seen what a weekness at this position has done to Bama the last two seasons.

DL- See above

OL- with a strong OL, Bama can afford a slight step back at QB.

I mean, rationally I think he'll be fine at the worst. But I'm not going to be rational when it comes to that position. It's foolhardy.

That's certainly a possibility. The inexperience factor will still remain, though.

Definitely agree here, too

He’ll have to prove that he’s good before I put any faith in him. He basically lost a season because he missed the ball and kicked the tee and got injured.

Daniel Wright is a senior who has several years of experience in the program and has started before. Jordan Battle is a great player, young or not. Josh Jobe and Jaylyn Armour Davis have been in the program a couple of years. Surtain obviously has started. New faces, yes. But I seriously doubt we'll be starting a couple of fresh out of high school kids, either.

Yea - I think you may be correct about Wright. I would guess he'll want one veteran guy back there with Battle, and that is generally how these transitions work. Especially after last season at LB.

I'm definitely concerned about QB with Georgia looming in week three. A new QB going against that defense is a tough deal. They are really talented. I definitely think that Bryce Young will play against them because he can move in the pocket. Defense will be tested big time against USC. Will be a very tough schedule.

I just hope we don’t have a chubby linebacker lagging behind routes across the middle and running backs out of the backfield.

I doubt said chubby Lb will start and I suspect with the new S and C coaches he has trimmed up and gotten faster. If not he will ride the pine.

Setting aside our place kicking woes (hoping Reichard is healthy) for a moment, what about punting? What’s the skinny there going into the summer? Since JK left, punting has oscillated between abysmal and tolerable but inconsistent. This weakness puts pressure on both the offense and the defense. The offense knows they can’t count on a punt to get them out of the hole if they are backed up and the defense knows that will put them on a short field where one or two first downs is scoring range for the opponent.

I don't know how good it will be but I feel pretty confident either Perine, Reichard or the freshman kid Johnson will be decent.

- Perine clearly has talent, he was just extremely raw. A year of experience and an offseason of work probably helped him a lot.

- Reichard can punt, but I'd guess they really would rather he not have to if they can help it.

- The kid we brought in as a walk-on from Oak Mountain, Sam Johnson, was highly ranked by the kicking circuit websites (#2 on Kohl's Kickers for punters). Of course, Skyler DeLong was ranked #3 in 2018, so.......who knows.

So.......I don't know how good it'll be, but I feel pretty confident it will be better than the last 2 years have been.

1) OLB - We struggled to set the edge at times and were definitely not as disruptive in the backfield as usual last year. I think a lot of this was due to youth due to the injuries. Hoping the more experienced depth at this position and DL helps production this year.

2) ILB - This was painful to watch at times last year. Partially because ILB play has arguably been the most consistent position during the Saban era. I think the light turned on for Harris at the end of the year. Dylan Moses needs to step up and be the alpha we were hoping he would be last year before the preseason injury. I think McMillon, Kaho, and Moody can provide some nice depth here.

3) QB - Hoping Mac Jones can really shine this year. I know Bryce Young will compete too, but not having spring ball this year definitely doesn't help his chances of winning the job this year. We don't need him to be Tua, but in this day and age I don't think we can afford for him to have a horrific October like GMac did in our 2009 Championship season and expect to run over everybody. He had some nice moments against Auburn and Michigan last year. Hoping he can build confidence as the season progresses next year.
