RE: ALFANO
quote:

No question, he’s a long way from playing this season, but the coaches do like what he brings to the table.

I understand that a lot of stuff is out there, but nothing is concrete and this is something that we are tracking. If Alfano decides to transfer or comes back to practice, we’ll bring that info right here to the premium subscribers.

Appreciate the insight on Jobe and Alfano!

I saw Saban just said he didn’t have an update on Alfano and that he’s disappeared a little bit. That can’t be good.

"Not really. He's kind of disappeared a little bit."

Saban continued. Seems like Alfano isn’t in good graces.

Nick Saban during The Citadel game in 2018. (Ben Flanagan / AL.com)
What Nick Saban said about South Carolina, former star recruit not practicing Updated 6:23 PM; Today 5:51 PM By Michael Casagrande | mcasagrande@al.com
quote:

After Alabama practiced indoors Wednesday, Nick Saban will meet with the press ahead of the Saturday trip to South Carolina.

A quick rundown of what Saban said at the podium:

-- It was a good week of work, Saban said. They aren’t worried about what outsiders think but they just want to play to their standard.

-- They have a lot of respect for the discipline with which South Carolina plays.

-- On Will Reichard/Skyler DeLong: Saban said they will make a determination later about who will punt. Said Reichard tried to kick it too hard when he booted one out of bounds Saturday. The KO coverage team needs to remain urgent even though most kicks are touchbacks. South Carolina has one of the better kickoff return teams.

-- Saban said freshman Antonio Alfano “disappeared" recently. He mistakes are made but they have to be confronted without noting any specific incident. When you don’t confront this problems, the consequences increase. Saban said he spoke to the team about that today. More coming on this later.

-- It’s too early to say how the chemistry of this team has come together to this point.

Injury/practice report: Alabama has changes on line, secondary by Christopher Walsh
quote:

Crimson Tide heads inside with lightning in the area

With lightning in the area, Alabama worked inside while preparing for its SEC opener.

The forecast for Saturday’s game at South Carolina is high of 90 degrees with a 20 percent chance of rain/thunderstorms.

In the secondary, Alabama worked on the dime package during the viewing, with true freshman Jordan Battle and senior Shyheim Carter both in the mix.

I didn’t see Josh Jobe at practice.
Christopher Walsh Editor 2 hrs A quick add: BOL reported that Josh Jobe was at practice, he was talking to Javier Arenas on the sideline during the dime drill.

Alabama offensive lineman Emil Ekiyor Jr. (knee) remained limited, but was participating in some drills. Center Chris Owens has been practicing this week after missing the New Mexico State game.

“Both players are practicing,” Nick Saban said On the SEC coaches’ teleconference with reporters on Wednesday morning. “Chris Owens probably is a little more up to speed. Emil is going to be a little more of a work in progress and probably a game day decision.”

Saban rejected the idea that the the coaches were sort of waiting for suspended lineman Deonte Brown to return to move forward with the unit.

“Look, we’re just taking the guys that we have here that we can coach, that are ready to play and we’re focusing on coaching them so we can do the best job we can do with it,” he said. “When somebody else comes back, we’ll do the same thing with them. But there’s no hypothetical plan for what might happen if this happened or that happened or this guy’s there or that guy’s not there. I don’t think you can do that.

“I think you’ve got to play the hand that’s dealt you and do the best you can with the guys that you’ve got, and the guys we’ve got right now are working really hard to try to do the best they can.”

Reporters got a look at the first-team offensive line, with Owens back at center, and Landon Dickerson next to right tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. at right guard.

Matt Womack
was on the second team at left guard. Kendall Randolph and Tommy Brown were on the right side.

Among the defensive linemen, true freshman Justin Eboigbe (foot) was practicing but Antonio Alfano was not.

Injury rundown
• Junior interior linebacker Dylan Moses: Out indefinitely with a knee injury.
• Senior interior linebacker Josh McMillon: Out indefinitely with a knee injury.
• Freshman running back Trey Sanders: Out indefinitely with a left foot injury.
• Reserve offensive lineman Hunter Brannon is out indefinitely.

I wish Alfano the best if he leaves or stays. The evidence that staying is the best choice is undeniable.

Alfano is a huge talent. The Penn State guys on 247 last year always warned about character concerns though and most Bama fans brushed it off as sour grapes. Hell I don't know. Hope he gets his shite together.

I don’t know that you can necessarily infer that he is gone yet. The “we all make mistakes” statement Saban led with leads me to think that the door is still open should the guy choose to make better decisions.

I wouldn’t say he is done by any means but he’s a long way from home and probably thinks he’s not getting a fair shake. I remember Ryan Anderson being sent home from the championship game as a young player who hadn’t done anything yet and thinking he was probably done. Hopefully this guy figures it out because clearly the talent is there.

Two different situation.

Alfano digged a huge hole that he can't get out of... won't be easy but we will see.

Alabama freshman DL Antonio Alfano 'disappeared a little bit' By Charlie Potter BOL
quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Freshman defensive lineman Antonio Alfano has missed all three days of practice this week and was not on the field for Alabama’s home opener this past weekend.

Following Saturday’s game against New Mexico State, head coach Nick Saban said Alfano was “going through some discipline things with me” and could return if he makes the right decisions.

In his last press conference before traveling to Columbia, S.C., for the Crimson Tide’s SEC opener at South Carolina this upcoming weekend, Saban was asked if he had an update on Alfano.

“Not really,” Saban said Wednesday. “He’s kind of disappeared a little bit.”

Alfano is not in the NCAA transfer portal as of Wednesday afternoon. The former 5-star recruit also missed three of the team’s practices in preseason camp “for personal reasons” last month.

The Colonia, N.J., native was the Tide’s highest-rated recruit in its 2019 No. 1-ranked class as 247Sports’ No. 1 overall prospect. Alfano earned first-team all-state honors at Colonia High School after a senior season that saw him record 76 tackles, including 28 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 10 quarterback hurries and six forced fumbles. He also saw time as an offensive lineman.

Alfano enrolled early at Alabama in January, and the 6-foot-4, 285-pound lineman recorded two sacks in April’s spring game. But he has not played in either of UA’s first two games this season.

“I talked to our team today about the fact that people make mistakes,” Saban said. “We all mistakes. I make mistakes. Probably everybody in this room makes mistakes. We make mistakes as parents, we make mistakes as coaches. We make mistakes in just about everything that we do.

“But I think you compound the problem when you don’t confront the mistakes that you make and you create greater consequences for yourself because of the choices and decisions that you make after you make a mistake. So hopefully, this will be a learning experience for all the guys on our team.”
