Yeah, biggest concerns for me are 1) Golding

I'm all for giving Golding a pass on last year due to the simple fact that he had Mac "I'm only about me" Wilson leading the D.

Come 6 months from now we will know what type of coach Golding is.

well trained but less talented upperclassman (McMillon)

I think it's faulty to assume McMillon is less talented. Personally, I was very impressed with him on Aday. He's a long athlete that really covered ground well, and looked in position and confident playing in space. I'm actually quite excited to see what he can do, because McMillon is all Bama, and the kind of kid I want to see succeed.

I don't think he's Matt Collins or anything, I think he is talented enough, but he's definitely not in the upper echelon of talent that we've had at the ILB position over the last decade. It's great to have a kid like that who works hard, is talented and knows the ins and outs of everything we do, though. Both to have on the field and to have to mentor the freshman and be an example.

I always hope those types of guys (the ones who stick around despite not playing for 3 years) get to play and have big years.

Biggest concerns, lack of experienced depth on the DL and depth at ILB and TE.

Going to have to depend on true freshman at DL and ILB for depth. Might have to use walk ons at TE for depth, mainly to play when the game is out of reach.

Pete Golding goes from small town to big stage, with big ideas in tow by Bruce Feldman

quote:

When Nick Saban dialed up Frank Wilson to ask about one of his assistants late in 2017, the UTSA head coach knew he was about to lose one of the best coaches he’s ever worked with.

“I’d like to visit with him,” Saban said. “What are your thoughts on him?”

Wilson had been friends with Saban since the Alabama coach’s days at LSU when the UTSA head man was coaching high school ball in New Orleans and would work the Tigers’ summer camps.

“I think if you interview him, he’s going to be the guy you’re gonna want to hire,” Wilson replied.

quote:

Golding traveled to Tuscaloosa the second Sunday in December 2017 — a week after the SEC Championship Game between Georgia and Auburn. He borrowed a sports coat from another UTSA coach for his meeting with Saban. The interview started around 2 p.m. Golding was a little nervous because of the magnitude of Crimson Tide football and its coach, who had won five national titles. And it wasn’t just Saban in the room. There were a half-dozen ’Bama staffers taking part in the interview.

By 2:15, Golding had settled into his comfort zone. That’s when Saban had him up on the board. Golding, relying on the running checklist he always jots down on the left side of the dry-erase board, diagrammed X’s and O’s with marker in hand, walking Saban through his defensive system. He ran through its Day 1, base installation to the nuances of the answers for each play an offense might throw at it to each player’s responsibility for every possible formation it could face. Over the course of the next five hours, it flowed into a natural conversation, with both coaches bouncing ideas off each other, explaining what they liked best.

At one point during the afternoon, Saban ducked out of the room and told a senior staffer that it was as impressive as any coaching interview he’d ever had in Tuscaloosa. He had Golding on the board for five hours. Golding never did make it back to UTSA campus. Saban hired the 34-year-old that night as his 10th assistant, designating him as the Tide’s co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach. Golding’s experience working with the secondary was key in Saban’s eyes as a counterbalance to Tosh Lupoi, who had just been elevated to defensive coordinator.

And now, one year later in the midst of massive staff turnover and after the 44-16 loss to Clemson in the national title game, Saban has promoted Golding to defensive coordinator.

I think Golding will be a star. I'm looking forward to him having full control of the defense this year while being surrounded by veteran coaches like Sal and Kelley. The biggest question I have after watching out ILB's last year is whether or not he's the right guy to be coaching ILB's or not. I think the play of Moses and the other ILB's this year will tell us. Our ILB play last year was a major weakness and disappointment, no way around that. Golding must do better there.

I agree, and I'm particularly excited at the idea that he'll be here for a number of years, which is very likely.

lack of experienced depth on the DL

I actually expect our DLine depth to better than last year's by quite a bit.

Agreed. Our DL depth is young, but I think our DL depth is going to be better than it has been since 2016. Guys like Mathis, Barmore, Wynn, Alfano, Eboigbe, Young and Sopher? Yes, please. And then the starters being vets like Davis, Ray and freshman phenom Dale? That DL is gonna be a nightmare by mid-October.

I do too, but it certainly is inexperienced at the point of attack. Lots of good options though (I think).

I agree the depth will be better just based on the 6 or 7 guys Bama signed this year. Just lack experience. Davis and Ray are the only veterans on the DL.

Mathis has also played a good bit of ball, but yes we are young in the DL.
