Sam Ponder on Alabama: 'Right now, it’s natty or nothing' By Brad Crawford
quote:

Former College GameDay analyst Sam Ponder has spent many days inside Nick Saban's oval office at the University of Alabama, picking the all-time great's brain about football and his mindset on how to build a championship program.

Now serving as host of ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown, Ponder doesn't often to get to many college games these days, but has kept a close eye on the SEC's behemoth, especially after January's disappointing loss to Clemson.

“I've spent a lot of time in Tuscaloosa and there’s one expectation — win the natty and that’s it,” Ponder said during Wednesday's appearance on Get Up!. “They’re not satisfied with winning SEC Championship. They’ve been there, done that. They’ve been at this stage.

"Right now, it’s natty or nothing.”

With obvious unfinished business on the horizon entering the 2019 campaign, the Crimson Tide have motivation to succeed, an element Alabama lacked last fall leading to a shift in attention to detail, Saban has pointed out through the offseason.

Likely the No. 2 team in next week's preseason Associated Press Top 25, Alabama is the only program to appear in every Playoff since its inception and is trying to win its sixth national championship during Saban's tenure. The journey begins vs. Duke on Aug. 31 inside Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a venue the Crimson Tide hope to return to four months down the road.

“Their season starts Dec. 7 in the SEC Championship Game,” ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky said on Wednesday's show. "They should be in the College Football Playoff and they should be in the national title game. I can’t recall a time when a Nick Saban team got physically whopped on the field. I think they’re going go back in time a little bit. I think they’re going to go back to dominating the ground game.

"They want their offensive line to be the face of the program in a way. Nick Saban built this program with big back sides, ya know? I think they want to go back to that. They’re going to pound the football. I could see them not being as spread and pass-happy. I don't think Nick Saban wants to play ball like that.”

Orlovsky's comments on Alabama's renewed focus on running the football is an interesting take following the arrival of offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, who replaces Mike Locksley as play-caller following the Crimson Tide's record-setting output offensively last fall.

The program's depth in the backfield took a hit last week when it was announced five-star freshman Trey Sanders was likely done for the season, but Najee Harris, Brian Robinson and several others are more than capable of putting Alabama back on the map as one of the country's best teams on the ground.

It's hard to imagine reigning Heisman runner-up Tua Tagovailoa simply being relegated to a game-manager role, however. He is the most prolific single-season pass in program history and is surrounded by arguably the most talented core of wide receivers during Saban's tenure.

Alabama Crimson Tide fall camp coverage Tony Tsoukalas • BamaInsider @Tony_Tsoukalas
quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama held its third evening practice of fall camp as the team worked under the lights Wednesday night. Players were dressed in shorts and shells and practiced in clear, 87-degree weather. Here are some notes from the media viewing period.

— Defensive linemen D.J. Dale (knee) and Stephon Wynn Jr. were both absent from the viewing period.

— The defensive line worked in pairs during sled drills. Raekwon Davis and LaBryan Ray were the first two followed by Tevita Musika and Phidarian Mathis. Byron Young and Christian Barmore were in the third group, while Ismael Sopsher and Antonio Alfano were in the fourth group. Justin Eboigbe and Braylen Ingraham were the final pair.

— Offensive linemen Chris Owens and Hunter Brannon both seemed to be limited and stood off to the side when the rest of the unit participated in drills.

Would love to see Dan say this in a Nick Saban press conference. I would bet my life savings that CNS's rant in response would make SportsCenter.

Jordan????.

like the lady strolling thru the men's dept at Macy's..."Just Lookin'" after Saturday, the positions start to really tighten up. As Saban always says " we start finding out who can help and who we will coach"
Jordan highly ranked... maybe his camp has been really good?

Actually, JAD was hurt during warm ups for the very 1st game last year. He may have just been a victim of "let's see what these guys look like" and then he was out there showing out when the media was not allowed to see? or like so many during the 1st 11 days, just be a like tweaked? I haven't heard anything negative about him, so just want to think he may be stiff or just being a victim of the numbers during this period.

Alabama beats heat with post-sundown practice By Cecil Hurt - August 15, 2019

Alabama practiced primarily after sundown on Wednesday, somewhat mitigating the effects of the August heat.

Defensive linemen DJ Dale (sprained knee) and Stephon Wynn (undisclosed injury) remained out of the practice, but sophomore LaBryan Ray was back, appearing to share reps with true freshman Justin Egboigbe at one defensive tackle spot along with other apparent first-unit linemen (there is no official depth chart) Phidarian Mathis and Raekwon Davis.

Terrell Lewis and Anfernee Jennings, who was wearing a sleeve brace on his knee, were the outside linebacker with Dylan Moses and Markail Benton on the inside. Sophomore Ale Kaho and freshman Shane Lee appeared to be the backups behind Moses and Benton.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban is scheduled to address the media after Thursday’s practice.

Miller Forristall posted this of Mac Jones. Seems while the lights are on, well maybe not for everyone. With the heat, both from the weather as well as from Taulia, Mac just has to be exhausted... and as Janis Joplin said, get if while you can.

Something I’ve noticed about this year compared to a few others. Coaches have been pushing the team to the absolute limit. The practices and scrimmages have been brutal.

I could be wrong, but I believe I read where Saban basically blamed his self for the performance against Clemson.

Sounds like his getting back to the basics when he was first hired. Time to get brutal and turn them young men into fanatics.
