We gotta stop letting Petty dribble. He just can't do it on a consistent basis. His shooting is the same way unfortunately

So I'll put this out there. If you combine the stat lines for Shackleford, Petty, & Bolden, it looks like this.

14 points
6-21 from the field
2-15 from the 3 point line
11 turnovers

That is abysmal for three of your main guards. Petty did have 8 rebounds to his credit, but that's really it. You can't have those kind of performances and expect to win. We honestly shouldn't have even been able to cut it down to a two-possesion game towards the end. The only thing I can cling to is, can they really be any worse than that....? God I hope not.

Yeah, the guard play has been abysmal. I get that Oat's is going trial by fire and not deviating from his system but the faster pace is exacerbating how turnover prone our guards are.

I agree that it seems there's nowhere to go but up.

However, Shackleford looks like he'll be a good player down the road but he's struggling with college level defenders

Not sure about Bolden since I didn't watch much West Virginia but for as poor as he is on defense, we need him to be a calming, mistake free player on offense and he's been anything but that so far.

Petty -- and some will likely disagree -- is absolutely crucial to this team having any chance whatsoever for a winning record because his size and athleticism (like the 8 rebounds you mention) is the only way we possibly compensate for losing the 2 forwards to injury.

However, he seems to be actually regressing on the offensive end in terms of poor decision making and his dribbling is even more disastrous at a faster pace.

It's been pretty ugly, but I think a lot of that is due to our players being out of control from trying to play faster than they're used to playing. I think they'll play better as the year progresses. And I agree that Petty is crucial. I thought he played a good game.

Petty should just play defense and rebound,he cannot do anything else,it's obvious.
One or no dribble and pass, only take a shot if it's a layup or clock running out.
Flabbergasted that a guy known as a great shooter cannot find his stroke for three years.
This means he doesn't know what's the problem or has no idea how to correct it.
I like his desire and hustle but the skill isn't there. Time to make him a role player.

Yeah, I agree about the progress. There's certainly a lot of room for improvement on pretty basic stuff. I was just hoping that the off-season work and practice had ironed out a lot more wrinkles than we've seen so far.

The problem is who else takes those minutes? Forbes?

All I can say so far is that Cecil may not have to write another "17-14" article this season.

He accurately assesses and seems irritated/frustrated at almost all the same specific things we are.

That seems like a "duh" but it's incredible refreshing to see.

I got roast by someone many days ago when I commented that I did not like the fact this team gave up 80 points in a pre season game. And now we give up 90 plus points against a non power 5 team. What is going to happen when we play UK this year.

Not lambasting our new coach at all but this fix may not happen until year 3 of the Oats era.

We're going to give up more points because other teams have a bunch more possessions due to our quick tempo.

I understand that but 80 points to a no name preseason team was the first clue we as fans should have had that this is going to be a long season. I hope I am wrong.

Our Coach O has a roster full of Avery's mistakes and then he goes and signs other teams recruiting mistakes to help with the main problem. Nate has to go outside the state of Alabama to get talent that actually has a brain. Doubt they get to more than 10-12 wins.

Tempo is fine but the turnovers with tempo is the major problem

They're going to get more possessions too if the team still has turnover issues as well.

I am counting the days down to baseball and softball. Especially SB as we got a lot of players back and all of our pitching. I would be shocked if we lost any games prior to SEC play starting and we should be preseason top 3

Since the negatives are abundantly clear, I’ll focus on the positives from last night.

- How in the Hell did Javian Davis not play last year? Do y’all remember when Davis said the staff loved the quickness of his feet on defense and his switchability when he was a recruit, and some of us kind of laughed (because he was fat)? Well they were spot on with that analysis. Davis was hedging and pressuring ball-handlers and not letting them around him. He’s our best offensive, defensive, and rebounding big and it’s not even close. The only reason we should take him out of the game is for complete exhaustion or foul trouble. Other than that Galin needs to stay off the floor, because he was a nightmare defensively. People talk about him playing because of his defense, but he’s not a good defender. He’s decent at defending post-ups, but atrocious on help defense and guarding his outside of 5 feet from the basket. He’s just too slow. (Even in the positives, there were negatives last night)

- No one is going to be able to stop Kira this year. Only thing he needs to work on is realizing this and not worrying about looking like a ball hog.

- Herb Jones can be an awesome player when he plays with confidence. He just needs to work on this confidence showing up before we’re down 22 points.
