That's pretty wild

#1 - Jay Bramblett (Hillcrest) (Notre Dame) (35 punts, 41.66 Yards Per Punt)

#5 - Brooks Cormier (ACA) (Purdue) (24 punts, 40.83 Yards Per Punt)

Luckily we have Agent Perine now or else Saban would probably have to fire himself.

To hell with the star rankings, just recruit a local kid that plays soccer on the side.

Just shows what a roll of the dice selecting kickers is.

Nah.. honestly, I think it’s safe to say that we just aren’t good at it. The way I understand it is that we often give the scholarships to the guys who dominate a camp... which, IMO, camps mean very little when it comes to punting/kicking.

Seemed to be just fine with PJ Fitzgerald, Cody Mandell, and JK Scott. The only three starting punters Alabama had for the first 11 years of the Saban era.

Maybe a good example that getting all the bluebloods you like can have a detrimental effect too. We've missed on far more Alabama kids during the Saban era than just punters and kickers. Though Daniel Carlson and his family were bordering all-time stupid. We recruit at such a high level it seldom comes back to bite us. The thing I've noticed so much in the last few years is the hesitation from Alabama kids who have big options to be overly excited about their instate choices.

A goalkeeper, maybe. Soccer players never punt. Placekicking is obviously a natural crossover, but not punting. You'd have to teach them the complete skill set...not that it couldn't be done, but we obviously have no one on staff who can actually teach the fundamentals of punting a football.

It's not that hard to keep up with the high school punting and kicking statistics for in-state kids and have someone take a look at them in a game or two. Going the camp route has bit us in the arse more than once. Time to learn the lesson and just find the best kid from our immediate recruiting area and sign them up. It shouldn't be too hard to find a guy that averages 40 yards per punt from Alabama or Mississippi and one that can kick field goals. Most of the other schools seem to be able to with little trouble.
