I suppose we oughta begin with discussing whether or not there will be a season this year, and then move along to whether or not Freeman has played his last game in a Braves uniform.

quote:

Tuesday’s deadline for a new collective bargaining agreement passed without a deal between Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association, as the players voted to reject the league’s final proposal before 5 p.m. ET.

With no deal in place, MLB announced that each team’s first two series of the regular season will not be played, meaning that the regular season will begin no earlier than April 7, while Spring Training games will begin no earlier than March 12.

I have to admit a six year deal for huge money that carries Freeman out near 40 isn't as appealing as possibly signing Matt Olson to a deal as he enters his prime.

Doesn’t look like Freeman is coming back…..because of 1 fricking year. JMO but I think he has earned that 1 year.

I would like to see us get Olson or Get Ramirez from the Guardians and Move Riley over to 1B. A lot of options if we don’t resign Freddie

I would just like to see baseball come back, but that won't happen until the owners start negotiating in good faith.

I said this at the end of last year. I knew he would be hunting a long contract and as a business you can’t commit that kind of money for that long at that age. I’m not mad about it

I wouldn’t care if the season didn’t start until after the normal all-star break. The season is way to long

The season's length is fine. It's the owner's trying to expand the playoffs that's one of the problems. A .500 baseball team has no business in the playoffs.

Honestly think Freeman is gone and with the braves limited payroll it's the best move. Can't afford to pay the unproductive years on the backend.

That being said betting we lose about half the season this year due to the lockout.

I think people don't realize the dire financial situation that is brewing on the TV front. Diamond media which pays a large majority of TV contracts in baseball is absolutely heading to bankruptcy.

Freeman is everything you'd want but it's hard to disagree about Olson especially considering his age value

As to the rejection of Mlbs offer...frick am all. They have a great deal offered at least good enough to keep playing while negotiating the sticklers.

I have to disagree with this. With the addition of the DH, Freddie’s value doesn’t go down nearly as much in the last year of the deal. Chipper would have played for two more seasons if we had a DH. I just don’t see how letting the best 1B in baseball walk now because he might be worse 5-6 years from now is a good decision. If we get another WS with him in that timeframe, I’m fine overpaying him for a year. We aren’t going to be able to afford acuña anyway.

ETA: I saw a good question the other day and I’ll ask it here - not counting Acuña, what one player from last year’s team would you want to be a Brave for life?

Great question and Freddie would be my top choice even over Acúna and Austin Riley 2cd. Acúna needs to show he's fully healthy then of course he's gotta be high on the list.

Isn't Acuna locked in until 2029? What do you mean we can't afford him?

I’m saying that, if he stays on his current trajectory, he won’t be a Brave after his current deal is up, no matter how much money we save between now and then. Just my opinion.

I agree with you up to a point. Yea I think Freddie deserves that year from a fan point of view, but this is business. I am not sure what is going on behind closed doors, but my gut says that there has to be more to this than just 1 year.

I don't understand why Freddie, or any number of players who have made it with 1 team, wouldn't want to finish with that team. I mean think about it, his name would be
up there with Chipper and Hank and other players that stayed with 1 team like Jeter. That is not bad company!

That's why I think there is something else going on that we don't know about. I am sure if Freddie is being Freddie in year 4-5, the Braves would happily extend the 6th year.

Well yeah. That one year is going to net him an extra $20-30 million. If he wants 6/$175 and the Braves offered him 5/$170 he'd have already signed a new contract. But he probably wants 6/$175 and the Braves have offered something like 5/$140. I don't expect him to ever play another game in a Braves uniform. The details of what we offered him and what he gets from someone else will determine whether or not he is dead to me. If we lowballed him or someone else just offers him something stupid like 6/$200 then no hard feelings, but if he walks over a difference of like $10 million then I will burn his jersey and hope his career goes down the drain.

I'm just doing my best to be ignore everything until they finalize a deal to start the season. Along with watching YouTube videos of the playoffs everyday.

I'm to the point where if Freddie leaves and we get Olson I'll be sad but feel pretty good about the future*.

* Assuming Freddie doesn't go to the Dodgers

MLB wanted to implement a pitch clock, ban shifts and have larger bases for the 2023 season during the last two days of talks

I'd be fine with the pitch clock, and I actually support a ban on shifting beyond a certain point. Larger bases though? Why? I guess it may bring base stealing back to an extent, which is usually a pretty exciting play. So maybe that?

When the Braves took Shea Langeliers with the ninth overall selection in the 2019 MLB Draft, much of the attention was placed on the young catcher’s rocket arm, with which he had already produced elite pop times with his throws to second base.

But having scouted Langeliers while the young catcher played at Baylor University, Braves hitting instructor Greg Walker knew the upside existed beyond the defensive side. So he wasn’t among those surprised when the catcher displayed his power potential while playing at Double-A Mississippi last year.

“You could always see the potential,” Walker said. “He’s an unbelievable kid. You talk about makeup? That’s how you draw it up. He’s just unbelievable.”

Langeliers was among the players who were excited to participate when the Braves began their Minor League Spring Training at their North Port complex on Sunday afternoon. The 24-year-old is preparing to likely open the upcoming season with Triple-A Gwinnett.

Langeliers ranks as the Braves' No. 2 prospect and baseball’s No. 69 prospect per MLB Pipeline.

“We saw him hold his own at the alternate site the summer before. and we saw him hit a lot of balls hard,” Braves assistant general manager Ben Sestanovich said. “So I don’t think the power production was as much of a surprise to those of us who had been around him.”

Projecting Langeliers’ offensive potential coming out of college was challenging. He didn’t do anything jaw-dropping while producing a .793 OPS over 34 games in the 2017 Cape Cod Collegiate Baseball League. But despite missing a few weeks of his junior year with a broken left hamate bone, Langeliers showed some power during each of his three collegiate seasons. He tallied 31 homers in 622 at-bats, which equated to one homer every 20.1 at-bats for the Bears.

Still, nobody was expecting Langeliers’ 2021 production, especially not while he was playing his home games at Mississippi’s spacious Trustman Park. The prospect hit .258 with 22 homers and an .836 OPS over 370 plate appearances at Double-A.

Adding to the impressiveness of his production was the fact this was Langeliers’ first full professional season, after the 2020 COVID-19 shutdown happened the year after he was drafted.

“I feel like I’ve definitely grown,” Langeliers said. “We’re surrounded by a bunch of great players and great coaches. We bring the best out of each other. You just grow along the way and know there is always improvement along the way. You just take that attitude every day.”

Like Austin Riley and many other Braves over the past couple years, Langeliers significantly benefited from working with Mike Brumley, who served as the organization’s Minor League hitting coordinator each of the past four years. Brumley stepped away from the role this year.

But Langeliers still spent time this winter working with the respected hitting guru near their respective homes in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.

“It’s a nice little [thing] we’ve got going there,” Langeliers said.
