Publicity stunt. For decades after someone famous does something embarrassing they fade away then burst back out into the public with a sob story to drum up support.

Admitting to bipolar disorder is closing any football future. No team will risk it now. He would have been better off admitting he was an addict because teams don't really care about addiction as long as you can play ball.
