Dallas Cowboys' 25-year-old defensive tackle, David Irving, has decided to quit the NFL over their policy on marijuana and sent this message to Jerry Jones in case they never speak again...

quote:

Irving tells TMZ Sports he consulted with his father -- a military veteran -- before making his decision. David feels strongly he should be able to medicate using marijuana instead of opioids, which he considers addictive and dangerous.

I was a no weed guy until opioid addiction hit home with my wife and her chronic pain. Weed works, and her being off the opioids is a godsend. I've really had to open my mind to the weed issue.

Let’s be honest, at some point some guys get tired of the physical punishment and want to quit the game. Skills be damned, some of you know it was jr high for yourself and you told your buddies you were quitting for some “heroic” reason

Didn't Ricky Williams take a permanent sabbatical to focus on traveling to smoke the world's best weed? How'd that work out for him? And RW was actually making BANK...

Drug addict chooses drugs rather than to play in the NFL. Sad.

Does your job require you to put your body through the same physical pains? He can legally get opioids if he just wanted to be a drug addict.

Weed makes you realize that money is not the most important thing in life. Sometimes smoking weed is. It gives you perspective.

No, he won't regret this in his 40s, when he is forced to take on a regular job. Nope, not at all.

He actually comes across as a pretty smart guy. Will definitely be trading in luxury for the way he wants to live. Props to him

Why can’t everybody understand that marijuana should be THE priority in our lives today. What’s wrong with you....

I think some OT posters actually believe this.

He should check into a rehab center for body/ mind/soul. Then hire a good life skills coach. Re-enter the NFL and create a new legacy.

I didn't learn anything from that. Is he trying to be a martyr in order to raise awareness for some cause? Scared of becoming addicted to opioids? This is almost as weird as Ricky Williams.

he's not totally wrong. Opioids are terrible drugs. Marijuanna if used correctly has far less long term side effects

100% agree. But at the end of the day, he walked away from a six (possibly seven) figure income to smoke weed. No amount of “he has a point” can overshadow that.

And another point to make is the self medicating is the result of the pain from injuries sustained playing a violent contact sport.
