I'm sure they get paid with plenty of tail. At that age it's more important than money.

And that senator gets paid how much while exempting himself from many of the laws he passes (affirmative action for his staff, has his own medical care system, etc). Being from Connecticut and a Democrat, I'll just assume he doesn't understand how supply and demand works.

You just had to say something about Democrats, like present day Republicans are any better. Too much Republican in you.

the players get a free education, massive exposure under the Ohio State brand, and the use of billions of dollars worth of facilities. And football is entertainment, and football generates many tens of millions in revenue, and pays for all other sports. It's also been proven that having a championship-caliber football team increases applications from prospective students, increases donations, not to mention the money from bowls, merchandising, TV, etc. Football is a big business at OSU, and that's why they pay their coaches a lot of money.

They don't get free education. They are performing a service to earn the scholarship. Not all departments pay the same. English department might pay less than College of Business. So Football could pay their students more than Volleyball. In fact there are different types of academic scholarships. QB can get a scholly which pays more than a punter. Student workers who perform advanced chores may get paid more than students who answer phones. If a coach's salary can be justified, there is no reason not pay the players. You seem to suggest that the impact of football is quite large. If so, the players should be paid. No reason why fruits of their labor should fund coaches in other sports or generate funds due to increased application pool. In fact, players should be allowed to make money as any other student on campus can. If a student has an award from computer science, she is not prohibited from working in a programming job.

There are a great deal more immoral happenings in the halls of government that should be examined as a higher priority Senator.

All athletes have a choice to play or not. Hard to feel sorry for them when they make that choice. Bad things can happen

I don't think he's calling out the coach's salary as much as he's stating that players should be paid.

I would have given a testicle to play football at a P5 school. Someone asking me to feel sorry for these guys is barking up the wrong tree.

I don't mind people wanting to have a conversation about the issue, but at least make sure you get the facts right before firing your first shot. Even if you ignore the education/housing/meals issue, players do get paid a stipend. That's not 0 dollars. I do mind people going on the attack without actually knowing the details of the issue.

Paying student athletes has got to be one of the most moronic ideas of all times. It’s a Pandoras Box that will forever ruin college sports and will be impossible to rectify. Student athletes ARE paid ....it’s just not in the currency they would like. Getting a full scholarship is like someone dropping off a bag full of money (150k on average). That’s real f’n dollars. I know this cause that’s what I spent to sent my son to school. A scholly sure would have been nice. Too many athletes look at college as a platform to market their abilities and not as an institution of higher learning. shite they should pay the university for the right to display their talents...so they can go make millions in the NFL.

Real f’n dollars would be actual, real f'ing dollars. Not books and a training table. I personally have no problem with athletes getting real f'ing dollars for their role in a billion dollar industry. But I'm a capitalist at heart so perhaps I'm missing something.

“Books and a training table”...could you be more ignorant? I guess you see no value in earning a degree ? You know ...that little piece of paper that gets you job opportunities for the rest of your lifetime...and at salaries that far exceed those without it. If you don’t want to go to college then don’t but gtfo of here with this player exploitation bullshite. A free ride in college IS real f’n dollars....just ask anyone with a student loan or a child in college.

It is a Pandora's box when coaches make whatever a school is willing to pay and no restrictions on movement while kids get no money and have to sit out on transfers

Senator’s salaries are just as egregious and we usually get nothing back in the way of them doing their fricking jobs.

Senators are underpaid if you exclude the amounts that they steal. I wish that we paid senators more, limited terms and recognized bribery and enforced laws against it.

Senators shouldn’t be paid anything. Making a career out of politics is the problem, not the solution.

Does Senator Murphy not realize that most of the coaches that are making these millions of dollars now, were once in the same position as the players they coach? They also were paid ZERO while submitting their brains to life altering trauma, but it has obviously paid off for them just like it will for some of the players.

That's to help him pay for his health care plan. Senator, why aren't you on the same plan. That's what's immoral.

Not so much by their salary but more by what they get off the books. Mitch McConnell is worth around 60 million from a job that pays around 175,000 this year but much less when he took office in 1984. Corporations have been buying both parties for ages for their benefit over the benefit of the actual voters.

McConnells wealth is estimated in the mid-20mil range. Not saying he doesnt benefit from DC, but most of that came from an inheritance when his MIL died. Harry Reid was dirt poor broke going in DC, and came out a millionaire. They do things with info they get. Like Pelosi did when she shorted some tech stock recently.

Chris Murphy is a good dude, and he’s not wrong, but there’s no easy solution to fairly compensating collegiate athletes.

Murphy is just another stupid self-serving democrat. Like all leftists, he lies, cheats, and steals, because to him, the ends justify the means.

I say the Senator should donate all of his salary, since he's also safely on the sidelines.

hmmm, a politician telling private citizens what to do with their money. never woulda guessed. why does everyone think that the state pays these crazy coach salaries? maybe they chip in a little at some schools, but not much.
user avatar
Eltegray65 months
Don't like it, then go straight from high school to the XFL and get paid. But that wont work out for 99% of football players because you need college to develop yourself as best you can until your NFL ready. So you get that and an education.

chris murphy is a communist. it is not state money. it is athletic department and donor money, but let that get in his way.
user avatar
Cheese Grits65 months
Actually, at most schools is is state money (taxpayers) as they are state schools. I think LSU is separate but they are more the exception than the rule. Also, at many schools it is rising fees on tuitions that add to the AD's budgets.
