Who said car dealweships weren't slimy? This Purdue student won a car and then didn't...

Per the IndyStar...
quote:

After successfully kicking 20-, 30- and 40-yard field goals during a halftime break on Aug. 31, Purdue student Zachary Spangler was later told his final kick was five one-hundredths of a second too late. Though Spangler, a junior in the College of Agriculture, was told immediately after the competition that he'd won [A two year lease on a new car], Spangler said he received an email Thursday from Trey Rohrman, director of operations for Rohrman Honda in Lafayette, breaking the news.

In the email provided to the Journal & Courier, Rohrman said that according to further review, Spangler's final kick didn't actually beat the clock, offering Spangler a compilation of videos of the competition that had been reviewed by the dealership's insurance company.

In an interview with The Purdue Exponent, Spangler said he was never told the ball needed to be off his foot before the 30-second mark and that he was instructed only to "just go out there and kick."

After receiving backlash for the prize reversal across social media, Spangler said Tuesday that representatives for Rohrman Automotive have reached out to discuss his case and consider ways to improve the Kicks for Cash contest.

After the J&C reached out to Rohrman for comment, Claire Hunter, a public relations specialist with Pence Media Group, replied in an email that the company is working with Purdue football to update its protocol for future Kicks for Cash contests to ensure transparency.

Asked whether another Kicks for Cash competition will take place Saturday when Notre Dame visits, as well as how much a typical two-year lease with Rohrman Automotive is worth, representatives with Pence Media Group did not respond.

Since news of the situation broke, Spangler said three other dealerships reached out to offer free two-year leases.

If you've got a timed event, it needs to be crystal clear what has to have happened by what time.
In this case, the guy was in the process of kicking & ball had not completely left his foot at the timer end..
is it considered "kicked"
Had he not even touched the ball is 1 thing; but because it wasn't COMPLETELY off the shoe (but in the process)...?

Purdue should sue them for the damage the pr disaster this creates. Could go from $10k to $10m as many contracts say results of contest go final at midnight.

It's a 2 year lease. The PR to make it right is way better than the denial. Stupid dealership.

This isn't the type of publicity you want as a car dealer.

It's a two year lease. It's not like they are giving him the car outright. How much money is that? It can't be much.

A 2 year lease at $400 a month is $9600. Lots of money for a college kid.

i was referring to the dealership. That's nothing to them over the course of two years. definitely cheaper than bad PR

Anybody got this kid’s number, our kicker missed 3 field goals Saturday that would have won the game.

Do a Google search for “hole-in-one contest refused to pay“. It happens all the time. I have a friend who won $10,000 in a hole-in-one contest. However, it was a little different as he had to “donate" $20 to even get a chance at the $10,000. And, of course, the $10,000 check came from an insurance company.

So he got paid. What's the problem?

I didn’t say there was any problem with the contest he paid to enter. However, there are tons of news stories on the Internet about people not getting paid for one reason or another – mostly fraudulent reasons.

It is amazing how many times this shite gets totally fricked, whether it is a half court shot at a basketball game or some field goal competition at a football game, there are just so many first class assholes out there nowadays

I think what happens is the offer is insured. Once the contest is won and prize redeemed, the insurance company reviews to make sure they are in the hook for it. I don’t blame them. I’d do the same.

Whoever is in charge of that dealership should be fired immediately. Creating a bad image that will last a lifetime over a 2-year lease on a vehicle is a WILD approach.

after the backlash
The Rohrman Automotive Group said in a news release Thursday night it intends to offer Zachary Spangler, the Purdue junior who successfully kicked 20-, 30- and 40-yard field goals, the option of a two-year car lease or $5,000 cash.

In addition to Spangler's award, Rohrman Automotive will also donate $5,000 to Ross-Ade Brigade, the student section at Purdue football home games, which will help student fans traveling to away games to cheer on the Boilermakers.

“Our goal with this challenge is to have fun, and our intention with these new guidelines should ensure just that,” Trey Rohrman, director of operations for Rohrman Automotive Group, said in the release. “We acknowledge that the process to determine whether or not Zach qualified for the grand prize took too long and his incredible kick should be rewarded. We are committed to an improved and more transparent contest for future games, and we appreciate the public’s scrutiny of the process to help us evolve and make this challenge even better and more fun than ever before.”

After the public debacle of the Cash for Kicks contest, new rules will also be implemented for future contestants, the release said. Moving forward, the contest will not feature a running 30-second timer, part of an agreement between Rohrman and Purdue Athletics, focusing the promotion only on the kicks.

Ah, the proverbial step in PR damage control: "the follow-up to bad publicity."

So they pass up completely free advertisement and public goodwill where all local newspapers/tv stations are fawning over how a car dealership didn't need to give this guy the car but still did? This would be better than a year worth of TV advertisements. These people can't do the math.
