Mark Richt Offers Up Bold Suggestion For College Football Playoff Expansion
© Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports
While on The Paul Finebaum Show last week, former coach Mark Richt offered up a new suggestion for the College Football Playoff to help avoid teams dropping out of future bowl games...
quote:

“Here’s the thing. You’ve got everybody opting out of bowl games now, and I know COVID had a big part in it. But I think Pandora’s box got opened,” Richt said, via 247Sports. “I think a lot more kids are going to opt out of bowls and you may see more teams opt out of bowl games. So, if people say, ‘These games are not meaningful anymore in the postseason other than the four (playoff) teams, or maybe you go to 32 teams and every game is a playoff game, but the bowl system handles those games, so the bowls can still survive’. But now, every game would be meaningful because it’s part of a playoff. That’s a big chunk of games, but that may be what it takes to make the postseason work again.”

A handful of athletes have become bigger than the game and that is ultimately the starting of the ending of any organization.

The FCS division does a 24 team playoff that seems to work well.

shorten the season to back to 11 games and tell conference championship games to frick off. To make up for a home game you can make the first round of the playoffs a home game for the higher seeded team. The NCAA FBS Football tournament. I’m here for it.

So a team plays 12 games plus a Conference Championship game.. (13) then they have to play how many more? 32 teams seems to equate to 6 more games for the 1 and 2 teams... only way to make that happen is to start mid Dec and finish about the 1st week of Feb. (and yes, these guys would have played 19 games... may as well just turn colleges into pro teams and forget the idea that any of these guys will need to go to classes. THIS IS BEYOND STUPID

Why should any attempt be made to make the bowls relevant? If they are going to die, let them die.

Be kinda cool. Like ways to remember when you met it to x round, by the different bowls you won along the way

The problem is the bowls got out of control long before the playoffs. Corporations would eat up the chance to get their name on a live event because even if its a crap bowl the exposure(ESPN)is great and somewhat inexpensive relative to season long live sponsorships. This creates the ability to have bowl games that no one cares about. The first thing that should happen is they should get rid of crap bowls that allow teams that shouldn't be in bowls. The second is they should only host bowls in cities/towns that are good destinations for players and fans to visit.

When you have 40 bowl games, a lot are irrelevant. Generally saying that bowl games are irrelevant because of the playoff really no different than saying bowl were irrelevant during the BCS. If anything bowls are incorporated in the playoff. If you go to the Sugar Bowl in a year when it is not a playoff bowl game, it is still the damn Sugar Bowl. Now if you end up in the Belk Bowl, well then yeah I get it. Too many bowls. Cut it down to 20 or so and as a whole it will mean more.

So is a team going to play in two bowl games to advance???

I wish I had a dollar for every time I have said exactly the same thing. It's stupid NOT to do it. But should an Independence Bowl get a playoff game? Uhhmmm, no.

Leave it just the way it is. Expanding will only mean more blow outs.

32 teams? WTF. Just go to 8 teams. And as for the bowls, they’re all private, not run by the NCAA so you can’t kill them, but let the NCAA expand to 8 teams. Only adds one more week and brings in more deserving teams.

The playoff is actually separate from the NCAA as well. The college football playoff has it's own committee and is it's own entity.

Let the bowls be meaningless. Win big or go to a meaningless Bowl game. Wait...just give everybody a trophy. Press the Easy Button now.

Just stop playing bowl games outside of the playoff. They are useless.
