NFL Analyst Has Message For Nick Saban About Drew Brees
Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports
Remember when Nick Saban coached the Miami Dolphins? Do you remember when he signed Daunte Culpepper instead of Drew Brees during the 2006 off-season? Saban still regrets the decision and refuses to take accountability for it, instead blaming the decision on team doctors who deemed Brees’ injury concerns were too obvious to just glance over...
quote:

“Don’t forget, when I was the coach of the Miami Dolphins, doctors failed Drew Brees on a physical,” Saban said when discussing former Alabama linebacker Dylan Moses who went undrafted because of injury concerns, via AL.com’s YouTube channel. “From that time on [Brees] made about 14 Pro Bowls, won a Super Bowl, passed for I don’t know how many thousands of yards. So I guess they make mistakes, too.”
On Friday, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio called out Saban for continuing to blame the Culpepper-over-Brees decision on team doctors...
quote:

“Saban can (and does) put all the blame on doctors he supervised and employed. The truth is that, if Saban wanted Drew Brees, Saban would have had Drew Brees,” Florio said, via Pro Football Talk. “At the end of the day, Saban made one of the all-time personnel whiffs in league history. That’s not on the doctors or anyone else. That’s on him.”

Dumb take. It totally depends on the organization. Sometimes coaches have complete control over personnel decisions, but that's rare. The gm is in charge of personnel decisions, and owners are writing the checks. That's one of the main reasons Saban came back to college, lack of control over his roster

Maybe he could have still made the call to sign Brees, but if your medical experts are saying no, most rational people would give a lot of weight to the doctors.

Well, Dr Andrews was saying he was fine. So we’re the New Orleans doctors. So the Miami doctors were the odd ones.

Of course he was in charge, is this new to anyone? He can blame doctors, groundskeepers, the people that wash uniforms, but everyone knows micromanages everything.

Well hell, he is human after all...we all make mistakes, even if some people tend to blame others for theirs.

Could Tigerdroppings add a board called the "All Things Saban" board? I think it's time.

The problem with 24/7 media and anyone and everyone having a voice is having to read crap like this.

I'm not going to assume Brees would have been as good for Saban as he was for Payton. Brees clearly needed to good coaching.

Saban is a great coach when things are stacked in his favor. He is average when they aren’t. Reference Miami and Michigan St

Danny Kanell's dad was the team doc. Told Saban that Brees would get back to normal but it might take a season, and that Culpepper was ready to go. Saban chose the QB that looked like he'd be healthier that year.

*Hind sight. But I came to say the same thing. Like judging all the coaches that passed on Tom Brady. That was blind luck.
