Sorry for the shaky hands. Found it in the road in front of my house. Western rat?

I am learning with everyone else on here.
First thing I try to do is determine if it is non venomous. It looks like round pupils so one I'd let live
That's all I got

Which one do you want identified? There are two right? Top is a rat. Bottom is a water snake of some kind.

Yeah, rat snake.
Not that it pertains to the thread, but I just saw a big snapping turtle on the side of the road that got ran over. Looked to be as big around as a five gallon bucket. Hate to see it because it is a new road that cuts through a bottom between two creeks. It won't be the last.

Either a gray rat or Western rat depending on your location. Western rats tend to get that orangey-brown color as adults like the bottom photo, whereas the juvies are usually colored like your top photo. Gray rats tend to retain closer to that juvie color. Generally gray rats are east of the river and Westerns are west of it, but there are areas you get both. The simplest way I’ve heard of to differentiate if it’s a toss-up is that gray rats have black tongues and Westerns have pink/red.

Top snake is Ratasnakious Onconcretious.
Bottom snake is Ratasnakious Onpinetreous.
Same species, different subspecies.
Both are protected species of the Outdoor Board, molest at peril of high fine.
