Interesting video just put up by Glenn Greenwald, talking about this topic, particularly Ozempic.
Author that just wrote a book about these drugs says 47% of Americans want to take them. He says from 1979 to 2000 obesity doubled, and then in the next 20 years it doubled again.
Says that this happens in societies that move from eating regular / whole / raw food that must be prepared each day, to processed foods. Processed foods, he says, interferes with satiety. Talks about a study with rodents where regular food was given and the rodents never gained weight, stopped eating when they were full etc. Then they were given food from a typical American diet and they ate nonstop. When that was taken away, the rodents refused to go back to the normal food until they were starving.
These weight loss drugs impart a feeling of satiety, so people stop eating. He says that mental health concerns do emerge on these drugs. The mechanisms are unclear though. Said there are 12 risks for these drugs that he lays out in his book - one of them is thyroid cancer. It's pretty significant increase in the risk of thyroid cancer among that cohort on these drugs - but thyroid cancer is pretty rare to start with, and incidence of cancer is pretty high when you're obese, so these things have to be balanced against each other.
