Thoughts on Montreal and Quebec?

Montreal is fantastic, Quebec City was ok but it was over run with tourists when I was there. People will greet you in French but as soon as you respond in English they switch over. People were very friendly and food is great.

Montreal is a great town. Finding English speakers is a non-issue. Strong food scene. Hit Schwartz’s Deli for Montreal smoked meat. Take in Notre Dame cathedral. Public transportation is fast, safe and clean.

In the right months, has to be right up there for best city in North America. I thought the restaurants were spectacular - especially for meat eaters. I had a moose steak that was perhaps the best piece of meat I've ever had. In that same meal, had venison, rabbit, beef and lobster.

Montreal is one of the best cities I have ever been to. Quebec City is very beautiful as well.

In summer, both are amazing

I'll take Montreal every day and twice on Sunday over Toronto

Lived in Montreal one summer (circa 2002) and spent another couple of weeks there as a tourist a few years later. It was a spectacular place to live and visit. Very bike friendly.

People were incredibly nice. One example: Wife and I went to an Expos (RIP) game. We were standing in the ticket line when a French Canadian couple pulled us out and gave us a pair of seats next to them. Ended up being behind home plate, watching Curt Schilling, all for free.

I was in classes at McGill, but we had extended afternoons and evenings free. We would walk all over town and find the best little restaurants and festivals. Never felt unsafe, even when it got dark (which seemed like it was after 9PM).

And, like someone mentioned above, the city’s bagels are fantastic. Fresh and better than anything I’ve ever found elsewhere.
