many of them decided to invite every aunt, uncle and cousin they have.

Honestly, what’s wrong with that?

It would seem that people celebrating an educational achievement would be seen as a good thing.

Well, it’s a simple matter of mathematics. Let’s say the facility holding the graduation holds 1,500* people. That means if you have a graduating class of 375 and each has four guests attend, you will fill your facility to capacity. And according to this story, Howard graduated 2,800 in this class.

*Howard’s Crampton Auditorium has seating for 1,500 people according to Google.

I read an article that I’ll try to find again but I think there was under 300 nursing graduates.

ETA: Howard article

280 nursing graduates according to this article, which makes more sense for the size of the venue. Who knows who is correct given the state of “journalism” today.

You missed my point - perhaps I didn’t explain it well, so my apologies.

I have zero problem IF the University says in advance “we only have X amount of seating in this arena, and we have y number of graduates, so each graduate may only invite x/y=a number of guest”.

What I was commenting on was the seemingly negative stereotype of black folks “have to invite everyone aunt, uncle and cousin they have”. I was saying that in fact shouldn’t be criticized or seen as a negative at all, instead that celebrating educational achievement should in fact be lauded.
