All manner of theories but most claim something about the flies eyes. Whatever it is it works....like a charm.

The old Miss rednecks at our camp say it looks like a hornet's nest to the fly, which is bad news for the flies.
ETA: the penny or nickel in the corner looks like the entry/exit of the hornet's nest.
