re: The upcoming loss of the OU-Ok State rivalry reminds me of a once-classic SEC rivalry....

Are you high? We moved on from a rivalry with kansas that had real meaning beyond sports.
Last I checked the University of Kansas was not in Missouri... so it doesn't qualify.
However, I will grant you that the KC effectively had some of that in state vibe with KU and MU grads mixed. Probably not like that at all in the rest of the state of Missouri. And also, I don't think the dynamic is maybe quite the same in Kansas City for the school kids.
When you have an in state rival... You can bet that the a-hole vice principle went to the school you don't like. And you can bet your bottom dollar that the teacher you hate the most did. And there is also some obnoxious dipshit kid(s) in your class that root for the other school.
And I have posted on this board that I thought Missouri-Kansas was the most historically significant rivalry in the country and was the most "slept on" rivalry as well. So I am in full agreement there.

It was huge to Okie st but you are correct. To OU, Nebraska was THE game.
Just a quick response to this post.
First part is for sure true.
The second part is really a more nuanced situation.
Texas has always been THE GAME for pride. Nebraska was always THE GAME for high stakes.
In other words... Losing to Texas hurt because you are losing to a team/program/school/fanbase/state that you truly loathe. Beating them (especially since the game is in Dallas, TX) is true elation.
Losing to Nebraska meant none of that. In fact watching Nebraska fans was always kind of amusing. Northern plains people were different than us. But it sure hurt to see all the hopes and dreams for the season go down the tubes with a loss. Winning that game meant a conference championship and a high stakes bowl game.
And as I stated earlier.. Oklahoma State (for OU fans) was just a game you didn't want to lose.

I'm sure there are a lot of OU fans that are sad to see the series go but speaking from experience they'll get over it fast. Being able to play teams like Bama, LSU, Georgia,etc...instead of ISU or TTech is huge. You guys will still have Texas and get A&M back.
Totally agree...the game only really benefits okstate. Would much rather play better competition on a regular basis, even if it means losing more often....11 am games in times iowa, or Lubbock were real ball busters.

The scheduling sux. I will be pissed if we don't play Arky every year.

Ran away from the Big12 because they would no longer allow them to stack the roster with partial qualifiers, AND they were tired of getting their arse kicked by Texas every time we played. (Think they only beat us once or twice lolololol)
Nebraska-Oklahoma was a classic when I was growing up. Tom Osborne vs Barry Switzer. With Keith Jackson on the call.
