In recent memory:

1992 - Cotton Bowl loss to Notre Dame

1998 - (potential) loss to t.u. if Mississippi State beats Tennessee in the SEC Title game

2012 - either one of Florida or LSU (lost to both by a combined 8 points)

I don't count 1992 as we would have still finished behind an undefeated Bama team who just knocked off #1 Miami.

A win against 5th ranked Notre Dame would not vault us over.

While 2012 is a good case you can’t forget about 1975. We were 10-0 and #2 in the country going to Arkansas and that game cost us not only a natty but an outright SWC championship as well. We ended up playing in the Liberty Bowl instead of the Cotton Bowl.
