Yea, really not trying to get into a dick measuring contest here but Ranger school is more of a "grueling right of passage" for a lot in the Army. Not really a "skills" course. If he's really looking to do it. He'll need to put on some solid mass. A&S will drop you about 15-20 pounds. Training needs to include; weights, running, and lots of humps (hikes with 50-100 pounds of gear)
The swim isn't bad. Not nearly the level needed for SEAL or Recon training but he (you) nee...

Getting older and starting to notice significant drop-offs. I've heard your late 20s and early 30s are your peak for strength, but I just don't feel it (29)
Most physically fit I've ever been was at 23 while stationed in Japan. Nothing to do but lift, run, and train.
