I want to downvote that for taking such a dismissive stance of the tennis championship, but you did wish us luck in other sports. You're walking a fine line, sir

There are only 3 sports: Football, Basketball & Baseball; however, since we are forced to play these others, it is good to win.

What are the big three for the women, then? Basketball & Softball for sure, but what would be #3?

As a soccer player (even if just a club one), I am disappointed by this comment. To those playing "these others", their sport is just as important as any other. No, they are not the money makers that football, basketball, and baseball (sometimes) are, but the other athletes put as much into their sports as the "Big 3".

Also, since we're missing softball, I'm really not sure what our big 3 for women would be. Basketball, lacrosse, and...? Not sure that matters to Sancho though since he thinks there are "only 3 sports."

I decline to offend with further posts on this subject; my apologies to those offended.

Did go to women's basketball games, back in college, when they used to play double headers.

No worries, SP! Personally, I enjoy watching the occasional women's soccer or softball game, and quite enjoy cheering on the bowling team. I try with basketball, but have a harder time getting into it.

Not offended. Just think you're discounting a lot of really good athletes. You don't have to enjoy the sports, just don't dismiss 'em.

Dude, they are all real sports. I have spent much time around both M and W sports and the "big" and "small" ones and I think what you consider the urea sports are filled with some very real athletes. Fewer prima donnas and some of the grittiest players did not play football, m basketball, or baseball.

I was away and am just catching up.

It just grinds my gears when folks diss folks who play sports other than football.

Fall = Volleyball
Winter = Basketball
Spring = Softball

Sadly, Dores only field a team in 1 of these 3 sports.

I think soccer probably gets the nod over volleyball in the fall. But I'm kinda biased.

Did you watch the SECN this fall? Seems volleyball was getting more exposure and had bigger crowds. Hard to beat tall attractive women in short shorts when it comes to drawing crowds and getting exposure.

Volleyball is more spread, so you can have a game every night. Most soccer games are at the same time on Friday night, Saturday mid-day or night, and Sunday mid-day. I think volleyball crowds look bigger because the crowd is right against the court in a small space. Soccer crowds are set back and spread over a much wider area.

Using NCAA numbers from 2012 for D1 women

Volleyball Top 25 attendance …….. vs …….. Soccer Top 25 attendance

Looks like Volleyball pulls much higher total numbers and much higher single game averages than W Soccer. Top 30 Volleyball teams looks like they are pulling around 2,500 per game and W Soccer is pulling 1,000 per game.

Looking at #1 in each sport
Volleyball : Hawaii drew 126,872 total and averaged 6,675 per game
W Soccer : Portland drew 43,063 total and averaged 3,313 per game

Looking at #30 in each sport
Volleyball : UNC drew 19,296 total and averaged 1,286 per game
W Soccer : Hawaii drew 8,556 total and averaged 856 per game
