Derek Mason's Future

I'll admit I haven't been following Vandy closely because of the poor performance over the last three years. How do Vandy fans in the know feel about Mason? Any word on replacing him at the end of the season? It's looking like a 3-9 season. Maybe 4-8 if Vandy catches a break.

Defense has been holding the fort but offense and mental errors are killing the team this year. Not like any SEC team has blown the Dores away yet.
3 pt loss to SC
7 pt loss to UF
7 pt loss to UK
6 point average spread is not terrible considering it is the SEC and we have seen some real blowouts by other teams so far. This is his 3rd year, so seeing what he can do in at least 4 is not out of the question.
Brooks went
4-8
2-9
3-8
Then 4 straight bowl game seasons
3 pt loss to SC
7 pt loss to UF
7 pt loss to UK

He has to get 5 wins or most fans will want him gone. There is a very large contingent of a small fanbase that is ready for him to go unless something drastic happens to finish the season like wins over UGA, Missouri, and Tennessee/Ole Miss. Personally, I think he survives with 4 wins. For me, he needs to win 5 OR win 4 WITH noticeable and appreciable improvement on the offense.
The defense is making some strange, critical errors too. The fact that Johnson for UK KEPT keeping the ball and no adjustments were made to slow him down. The GT, WKU, and MTSU defensive performances have also jaded lots of people on how great of a defensive mind he is. UK, UF, and SC all have pretty bad offenses. Holding them down is not really saying much since they do a good job of limiting themselves.

I get the GT issue, if only 2 schools still run the option in FBS it is hard to devote the time necessary to defend it vs the time to develop defenses you can use in many games.
The ACC schools play GT enough to have some "mental memory" carryover from year to year. I have been critical of Mason but I will hammer him for that game.
Kentucky has an offense, just lasts for 2 quarters tho
Game #1 | 35 points in 2 quarters, 0 in 2 quarters
Game #2 | 7 points in 1 quarter, 0 in 3 quarters (granted it was Florida)
Game #3 | 35 points in 2 quarters, 27 in 2 quarters
Game #4 | 14 points in 2 quarters, 3 in 2 quarters
Game #5 | 6 points in 2 quarters, 0 in 2 quarters (granted it was Alabama)
Game #6 | 17 points in 2 quarters, 3 in 2 quarters
Take away 1 game and UK is scoring 1.5 points per quarter in 2 quarters. Conversely, take away Alabama and Florida and you have 35 points + 35 points + 17 points + 14 points in just 2 quarters. I joke on another thread that UK is scoring in the first half and UT is scoring in the 2nd half. If either could play a whole game that way, Vols could be ranked #1 and Cats could be ranked in the Top 20.

I wasn't saying that the GT performance jaded ME. I understand the issues in defend the triple option, especially sandwiched between the air attacks of MTSU and WKU. Against GT, our players were in position to make plays, but they were losing the one-on-ones that you HAVE to win to beat triple option teams.
My expectation is 4-8. We'll beat TSU then catch someone else. It may be UGA this week after Eason goes 5/17 for 29 yards with an INT. I would fully expect that we stack the box to stop their very scary rushing attack and let our DBs play on an island. Of course, Athens seems to be our person hell the last few trips.
Missouri is also a possibility if they don't recover their pre-LSU form of scoring seemingly at will. We'll get a better idea on them after playing Florida and MTSU in the next two games.

He'll make someone a fine defensive coordinator in the relatively near future...

I just hope we go down and beat UGA to put this talk aside somewhat for a bit. Actually, that probably makes the next 3 weeks a little silly. In that scenario, we would have the game against TSU then a bye week before heading to Auburn. Obviously, losing to UGA, as long as it is not in humiliating fashion, probably adds nothing to the conversation. Beating them will get those ready to fire Mason NOW coming out louder to warn us about him dick-tripping to a 5-7 bowl trip while others, including myself, will point to how rare wins over UGA are along with a -17 total margin in SEC games. We've lost SEC games on a 50+ yard FG, a final drive without our starting QB to potentially tie (and with history that this team can do that), and 3 misfires into the endzone from 8 yards out with 1 from 13 yards.
We are not far away from winning any of those games. They were ugly, but we had a decent chance in at least UK and SC even if you say we never drive on UF to tie. It's infuriating to watch. Shurmur said it in his UGA press appearance that this talk of "almost" makes him want to puke.

Don't get me wrong, I want Mason to succeed and would welcome a win over UGA. It just doesn't seem very likely at this point.

I don't think it's all that likely either, but UGA isn't THAT good. I think the defense holds them to 24 or 21. Any sort of offensive consistency, instead of just flashes followed by stall outs, means we'll be in this game. The early kickoff may work in our favor if we can come out strong.

I was kinda right! Oh boy! Let slip the hounds of war!

Mizzou should be a win
Other 3 could / should be close if scores stay low.

If we can beat Missouri, that would be 5-7 without upsetting any of the ranked teams. That would be 1 more win than last year. It's not pretty improvement, but it is improvement.
