Maybe I'm missing something but I keep herring people talk like our D is some sure-fire commodity but 2016 was pretty lackluster if you ask me, so I don't know where the hype is coming from.

Our redline defense in particular doesn't look very impressive to me. Hey, I could be wrong and I haven't looked at what national red zone scoring statistics are but a team scoring a TD 74% of the time they are in our redzone seems worrying to me.
Us. Opp
RED-ZONE SCORES............... (38-45) 84% (39-43) 91%
RED-ZONE TOUCHDOWNS........... (25-45) 56% (32-43) 74%

Actually, only 2 TDs against us were not scored by an opponent in the redzone it looks like.

That's called bend but don't break. We made the opponent drive the field instead of giving up big plays.

We finished 4th in the SEC in total defense behind 3 juggernauts (Alabama, Florida, LSU) and that includes play GT who leads NCAA in rushing yards.

We return 10 starters and like 20/22 in 2 deep. I would imagine we will be improved tremendously. To your point, our red zone defense was one of the worst in the sec (13th in scoring and TD percentages) and will need to show much improvement there. I think with our 2-deep on the line, we should be much better there.

Again, we are UGA, but having all our guys come back, including 2 RBs that can control the clock and keep our defense off the field more, we should improve tremendously.

Kirby's supposed to be a defensive mastermind.

If that would ever show, it would be in the mythical year 2 with virtually every player back and almost no great quarterbacks on the schedule.

Not exactly. This defense broke constantly when opponents reached our red zone.

Most BDB defenses either held oopponents to FG's or created turnovers even though they give up big drives.

Kirby said at media days that he plans to relinquish most of the in-game defensive coaching this year. Said he thought he was too involved during games last season and plans to focus on just being the head coach.

FYI - Richt said his biggest regret at uga was giving up play calling....now, there is a difference between OCing and DCing, but still.

The offense was a lot better and more explosive when Bobo called plays.

That's because Richt was virtually clueless about the offense without Bobo to lean on. He was so far removed, he couldn't help fix our issues as they became apparent.

The regret wasn't getting Bobo more involved.

Not "bend but don't break" but you understand that we protected our DBs schematically last season.

Unfortunately in the red zone, we had no run contain. We were a seive on the outside.

I think Kirby was so involved in running the defense last year that he lost lost control of the overall game. Stepping back will give him a chance to "manage" the game rather than get caught up in it.

Was beyond awful. Simply getting that at a mid level would make a big difference.

If Kirby steps away from the defense, we are effed. He's no better at calling time outs and motivational speeches than Richt or anyone else.

Coach the D, hire a robot to tell you when to call time out.
