Okay, at the risk of being down-voted all to hell here, WHY is Widespread Panic such a big deal?
Not really sure how to answer this question, but I guess because a lot of people like their music. Shows are a riot. Not for everyone though for sure.

I'm relatively young and didn't go to UGA when they peaked around 1998-2002 but they captivated college aged crowds with their tunes.
I was a 1998-2002 guy (literally, freshman in 1998) and I really had no idea. I'm not a weed guy (totally okay with it, I just don't do it) and I've always kinda had them associated with that pothead/townie crowd.
I definitely wouldn't be going to two shows in Athens and another in Savannah, but that's just me.

There is a strong correlation between music lovers and pot. Panic is not a stoner band in my mind. They are a southern rock band that is followed by music lovers (and thus stoners). Most of their songs are uptempo and even have somewhat of a metal sound. Just my $0.02.

Haha I hear you. For perspective, I'm a recent grad from Savannah with friends still living in Athens so it's easy for me to get to these shows. Its not like I'm shuffling a full time job/wife/kids around to go get my music fill haha.

That explains a lot of it, really. I've got the exact opposite...full time job, part time job, wife, two kids and one on the way, etc......so I definitely ain't got time for three shows in a week or two.

No shite!
Did I mention we're also in the midst of buying a house? And once we move, I'll then be managing a rental property again, too?

SIC EM,
For the record, I don't smoke pot either. With that said, i've seen them 100+ times. Which is pathetic, I know...
I'm a little older than you guys, but when I went to school it was "the thing to do". We would stop what we were doing and drive anywhere within 6 hours to see them, without hesitation. Keep in mind, at that time they were primarily playing throughout the Southeast, so it was a great excuse to see other towns, and college campuses. It was also relatively cheap, ticket wise.
It was also a solid mix of Fraternities (and sororities), and "stoners".
Now for me, it's an excuse to see my college buddies that moved all over the country after graduating. It's our time to live it up, and pretend we're in our early 20s again.
I don't listen to them as much as I used to, and as the previous poster mentioned, I really miss Michael Houser. I've had the pleasure of meeting everyone in the band, and he was one of the most genuine guys you would've ever met. Super shy (to the point of "Panic attacks" if he got overwhelmed), hence the name of the band Widespread Panic. (Although I never saw him like that).
Now i'm going to get back to having a beer, in my favorite town, seeing my favorite band. Today is a good day
And here is a video for ya, to let you decide yourself.
I feel this is the quintessential Panic song, and the best version ever documented.

Going tomorrow. Should be a big time

Fun times, but those set lists were snoozers... still pretty good shows considering they were 1 day removed from firing their founding drummer

Agreed. Night 2 was much much better than night one though. Overall it was a blast but agree that the sets were underwhelming in terms of song selection. The drummer swap definitely played a role.

Especially considering the setlist they're throwing down tonight in Richmond

What's the story here?

A lot of speculation, no explanation.
Their management isn't the best at communicating with their fans. Never have been

Are they going to make shitty records like "Ball" again for a few years..... After losing another founding member?
Posted on 2/12/16 at 10:45 pm to Jefferson Dawg
I googled it.
So, he hadn't even been playing with them for over a year before the perma-split?
Are we talking egos or addictions here? WhaTS the score

He took a year or so off, then made his triumphant return for the Playa run (4 shows), and now he's gone
I'd bet it had to do with poor health and addiction issues
And they've come out with at least two records since Ball that were worse
I dig the last one though

Well. If worse comes to worse, maybe he can get a job with that guy who initially took over for Houser... selling insurance.
What was that dude's name again?
