Mason WORKED Smart on game management. This could just be attributable to a 3rd or 4th year coach vs a rookie, but dang did it feel like Smart was coaching from his heels all night.

The two time-outs before the FG at the end of the 1st half made Smart scared to blink. You could feel Mason just smirking at Smart going "I dare you. Try to kick it". Smart can talk about situational stuff but at the end of the day, if you're THAT scared of Vandy's poor man's Chris Davis, then you don't need to have your hands on the decision-making controls. Man up and kick it.

Second, there were too many times that it felt like Vandy's offensive play-calling, especially in the 4th Q, was one step ahead of us. This is inexcusable because Kirby was brought here as a defensive mind.

Third, Mason calls a time out to prepare his team for that gimmicky bullshite play we tried to run after he SAW us line up in an unorthodox formation. Our response? Run that exact play. I get coming at them even if they know what's coming, but that doesn't apply to TRICK PLAYS where the entire point is to catch the defense off-guard.

Overall, Mason won the head coaching matchup and that is REALLY disheartening.

We gave up 171 yards and 9 first downs. What more do you want from the defense? If our special teams weren't garbage, we could've nearly pitched a shut out.

I actually thought the end of the half Hail Mary was pretty genius. They were absolutely not ready for it and were scrambling to get db's into position. Just didn't work. I don't think that was a poor decision.

I agree with your last point though.

Our receivers are tiny. We should NEVER be throwing Hail Marys

It had about a 0.00001% chance of working.

On a normal day, I would whole-heartedly agree with you but go back and listen to Kirby's presser. That last drive, and really the entire 4th Q, they were moving the ball purely because they were outsmarting us. I swear Smart said "we weren't prepared for (insert Vandy play call)" like 5 times.

Unfortunately I think we should get used to being out coached.

I'm starting to sense the same type of stubbornness and unwilling to adapt that often characterized Richt. We keep trying to attack defenses where they are strongest.

Actually I thought it was some pretty smart coaching on Smart's part. Mason used up all his timeouts trying to freeze our kicker and then when Smart put the offense back on the field, Vandy's defense looked unprepared and Mason had no timeouts left to get their act together. The only aspect I disagreed with was the traditional bunching up of the receivers in the endzone since we have generally smallish receivers. I would have sent Ridley and Nauta to one side of the endzone and had McKenzie and Godwin running deep posts to the other side hoping they could make someone miss and score.

The problem with the Hail Mary was that we only had 3 receivers at the goal line. Vandy had 5 DBs back there.

Well yeah the db's are generally always gonna outnumber the wr's on a Hail Mary play.

The goal was to hopefully catch them in a substitution penalty, get a free 5 yards, then have a reasonable shot at a field goal. It was a really good strategy, but didn't work. I think that was the most obvious moment in the game where Kirby outcoached Mason.

The defense looked good, but Vandy has garbage for offense.

Hail Mary's have a horrible chance of working, in spite of what Tennessee did to us. I would have preferred to see us attempt a FG. I understand why he didn't try it. We've been terrible with FGs....but Rodrigo was showing promise, and it could have boosted his confidence had he made it. I actually think he could have made it. By going Hail Mary you tell your kicker "I have zero confidence in you.", and you go with a play that you have very little chance of making.

If I am not mistaking we had another receiver on the other side of the field in the end zone with one DB guarding him. We had a better chance of completing that one. Plus, one of the receivers was McKenzie? We should have our tallest receivers back there. It is essentially a jump ball situation....of course, I guess McKenzie could out jump the taller guys, I guess...but he didn't.

Ok. This DOES make sense.

What more do we want from the defense?

How about stopping the worst offense in the conference when the game was on the line.

In fairness, South Carolina and Vanderbilt are the two worst in the conference.

We bicker about this play and situation all we want but the fact remains is that we should never be at a point where we need to kick a 50 yard field goal or throw a hail mary to gain momentum at home on homecoming against Vandy...EVER.

No matter the coach, no matter the year, no matter what.

I am still not sure what I watched Saturday...but it sure as hell looks like we are headed in the wrong direction.

Trust me. He honestly does not believe coaching has anything to do with what we have seen on the field. A total disconnect.

It is a combination of depth and inexperienced coaching.

Honestly...we are all overreacting. One group says we have no talent, and that is not true. the other side says we have plenty of talent and it is all coaching. That isn't true, either.

We lack depth, but our first string is very talented. Do we have shortcomings? yes. So does every other school in the country.
