I always played baseball and soccer so I dont know much about the fundamentals of defense in football, but when they pitch the ball to the option runner aren't you supposed to hit the guy who pitched it?

Hit him every single time and eventually he pitches it earlier and earlier to brace for the hit and thats when you can capitalize on the containment.

I saw us playing the pitch every single time vs GSU and a lot of the time he didn't let it go and we bit on the fake. Am I wrong?

Defense vs the triple option boils down to basic assignment football as they call it. Every defender is either responsible for closing a gap on the DL or taking on an offensive skill player one on one. So yea, someone is assigned to hitting the QB while another is to take on the RB. This way any fakes/diversions shouldn't matter because everyone is covered regardless of who ends up with the ball. The main problem with Tech's triple option is all of their offensive players are taught to execute cut-blocks at the point of attack. Pretty hard to stay on your feet when someone is diving at your knees/ankles.

I gotcha. But I saw the guy who was coming in on the qb would bite on the fake and the qb would just cut back and pick up 6-8 yards. We should be hitting that guy everytime right?

For example, I just saw Houston demolish the Navy qb twice in a row when he was pitching it and they havent run it since. Shook him up a little.

Depends on the defense. When I played in high school, we faced the options often. Originally we were told to always hit the quarterback and make him hate life. Someone else had responsibility for the pitch man. Then we had a coach install a "50" defense. Now we were suppose to get close enough to the QB to make him pitch, then drop our outside foot and try to get an angle on the pitchman. It sucked. I loved smacking the QB.

defending the option should involve hitting the QB a lot...A LOT!

Hopefully our guys play sound assignment football.

We need everyone accounted for before we can let Floyd, Jenkins, and Co. blow these frickers into next year.
