I trust Kirby on the hire, but I distinctly remember us trashing the front 7 of UNC all offseason last year. Maybe he just didn't have the talent there who knows.

It is satisfying to assert dominance over Ole Miss though.

His coaching resume isn't all that to gawd over, but Kirby must see something we don't.

Does he have any notable recruiting ties in our target areas? Was at UNC...maybe tight with Zamir?

I don't know if Scott recruits NC area but 5* WDE KJ Henry should be a target. Committed to Clemson currently

Maybe Hugh shouldn't have the NCAA hanging over Oxford and he wouldn't have to deal with stuff like this

Nice

This guy is considered an up and coming star in the coaching ranks. Arrived at UNC in 2015 and helped that defense improve by giving up 14.5 pts less a game. The team had 23 sacks total all season, 19 of which came from the D-line. I know all UGA fans wanted some splashy hire, but just maybe Kirby Smart knows what he's doing better than those criticizing this hire

From 247:

The Tar Heels have had the ACC's worst rush defense in yards per game for the past two seasons. It has ranked 11th (2016) and 13th (2015) in the 14-team league the past two seasons and 11th (2016) and 10th (2015) in sacks.

I'd go full Devil's Advocate and ask were those stats because of NC talent available?

As much as it pains me to say, the ACC was pretty damn good this year.
Not that it excuses a shitty defense.

It's a bit of the chicken/egg scenario, but I distinctly remember them playing pretty well against us early until Fedora decided to go full Fedora and throw when they should have run. Their defense was gassed by the end of the second quarter. In our system, that shouldn't be an excuse, but what is concerning here is he doesn't have a big resume to show his ability to recruit. If we were going to move from Rocker, it needed to be at least equal on the coaching side (or close to it) and a giant step up on the recruiting front. I'm not sure his name brings any "clout" to sway a high 4*/5* guy to come. He's gonna have to have a pretty stellar personality.

ETA: 247 "commit list" doesn't really change my opinion: LINK
