I went back to 2001 to see how all of our first year starters did through their first 7 games (7 because that's how many eason has). I did not include DJ or Lambert because both of those guys saw quite a bit of extensive PT prior to their starting years. Everyone else, including a senior Cox and Hutson, played very sparingly (if at all) prior to their starting years.
2001 - RFr David Greene
149/237 (63%), 1,982 yards, 11 TD / 5 INT
2006 - TFr Matthew Stafford
47/93 (51%), 582 yards, 1 TD / 4 INT
2009 - RSr Joe Cox
120/209 (57%), 1,581 yards, 13 TD / 9 INT
2010 - RFr Aaron Murray
112/181 (62%), 1,652 yards, 12 TD / 3 INT
2014 - RSr Hutson Mason
101/146 (69%), 1,022 yards, 10 TD / 3 INT
2016 - TFr Jacob Eason
113/208 (54%), 1,366 yards, 9 TD / 5 INT
So what do we have here?
-The ones who fared the best were either upperclassmen or redshirted. Stafford is the only other TFr on here and he did awful.
-Worth noting...stafford's numbers look a bit weak but part of that is due to him having a few games within the first 7 that he only played very sparingly. For convenience sake I still just took the first 7 games for everyone.
-Eason is about what you'd expect percentage wise when compared to others...you'd certainly hope that the seniors/redshirts would be a bit better here. He is doing better than stafford at this point in both their TFr seasons.
-Eason compares relatively favorably yardage wise when compared to the others.
-While JE is lagging behind in touchdowns, it's nice to see that he's not completely off the rails with picks. He does have similar or more than others on the list, but nothing that would be too shocking IMO.
-One big takeaway I have is with the caliber of receivers others had. Other than stafford, who had basically nobody since momass was pretty bad most of 06, all the others had at LEAST one and sometimes multiple big time, solid, reliable receivers. Eason doesn't have a single guy on this roster that would compare to the starters DG/JC/AM/HM had.

I'm not worried at all about Eason. He's got a lot of talent. This is just what happens when you put godly expectations on a 18 year old.

And for the most part he doesn't compose himself as a true freshman

Drops are heavily effecting easons numbers... Chigbu alone....

Except for the South Carolina game, I have been very pleased with what we have gotten from Eason.

Every team has drops, but we seem to have been hit by more than our share.

There has been nothing wrong with Eason. And based on these stats he's in line with everyone else for the most part. People had high expectations from him unfairly. He's playing like a freshman. Kid has a bright future in front of him
