Starting July 1st, police in Athens will not take students into custody for underage drinking. They'll receive a citation/$300 fine instead.

That's how it used to be. Much better policy, if you ask me.

Just another gamechanger for UGA Athletics. We've had so many good things happen since Dec...

During my years in Athens the drinking age was 18, it was 18 from '72 till '79...

Very, very good news.

I'm curious though how this affects suspensions and official team policies. Even though they aren't being arrested (thank goodness, that should be common sense), I wonder if they'll still receive the same punishment? I suppose it is still an "alcohol related offense".

Well, it would be less likely that UGA AD office would be alerted to a citation for that incident. If they did find out, I would guess it would have to go under the alcohol policy.

If its not reported then no one will care. It's nothing more than a ticket and we should treat it just as lightly as AU treated Nick Marshall after his pot citation.

That being said, I could still see Georgia penalizing harshly because that's how we roll.

yeah that makes sense. I was trying to think of other instances of players getting in trouble for only being ticketed. First example that came to mind was Billy Humphrey jaywalking downtown..then I looked it up and saw he was arrested for that

eta: also saw it was for underage possession as well. Oh well.

I don't think the newspapers can find out about these types of offenses now to blow them up. O

We ain't outta the woods yet... Ath-Fest is this weekend & they still have 5 more nights to get thru.

Maybe Richt should load 'em up & take them to Jefferson or Madison & sequester them until Tues. night. ACCPD & Williamson's bunch of stormtroopers are gonna be looking hard for FB players since this is their last weekend to bust someone & immediately call the AJC...

Wonder if they'll still call Chip Towers if they write just a ticket?? You know they wanna go out with a bang...

Wasn't that largely the policy, anyway? It seemed like most of the people who ended up in bracelets got them for "Drunk and Disorderly," not being underage.

Trying to find the list of UGA players arrested for MIP but Arrestnation.com charges you a $1 now per player info...

Prolly a thread on here somewhere but my search skills suck...

That's the biggest thing. No jail record, stays off the AJC radar.

At the very least it offers us an opportunity to discretely suspend guys before the season. At best, it let's us avoid backlash for if/when we wise up and handle these things internally instead of forfeit key position battles.

Can bust them on campus. ACCPD typically rule the roost downtown. Don't have booze in your dorm and don't drive drunk and you won't have a problem with Campus police on that front
