Those guys are going to make a killing. Does this make Southern Soul a chain BBQ place now?

Location location location.
Where exactly are they opening?

If they are cool, they'll open downtown.
If they are smart, they'll open on Epps corridor.
If they are stupid, they'll try to split the difference.
I hope they realize they have a captive audience on SSI. Well to do residents and vacationers.
That is very important to their current biz model.
That won't be the case in Athens.

If you build it, they will come.

Sure, a few hundred customers a month.
You'll need a few thousand to keep the place open.

I an sure SS is good, although I haven't had it - I do like the menu.
But to have Big Bob Gibson's rated that low and The Rendezvous rated over Central are jokes. And by the bye Central has plenty of BBQ sauce, so they missed on that too. Sounds like they never set foot in the joint.

I agree about your assessment of locations, though it should be noted that Five Points Deli expanded to Epps and shortly thereafter collapsed, closing both that and their Five Points location which had been open for eons. I think there's more to that story, if I recall correctly, but still.....need to be careful to not overextended themselves.

A true travesty as their chicken salad was the GOAT

Indeed. I used to go in for that stuff ALL the time when I worked at UGA. Darn shame.

I don't get all the fuss over Southern Soul. I've had it a few times, and while good, I never thought is was outstanding the way others do.

Deli's do great with walkup traffic like Five points, or when anchored with a large grocery store. Was the Epps location of the deli connected to the Kroger there? If not, it's no wonder it failed.
For some reason, people don't drive to a deli as a destination. They'll walk to one down the street, or eat there if they are already in the parking lot at Kroger. But they don't say "Let's get in the car and drive 15 minutes through soccer mom traffic to get a ham sandwich".
ETA-
Example-
Subway. Except in very rural areas, you never see a Subway sitting off by itself somewhere. They always anchor to a grocery store. They know.
Southern Soul would do very well at Epps.
They'd survive downtown, but make half the money they would make in Oconee.

I can't find anything on google saying they are opening in Athens. Nothing on their site either, and I browsed their twitter feed.

That's a good point.

No, it was in the section down from PeachMac and Five Guys. They just opened a Dunkin' Donuts in the same spot a few weeks ago.

Or a gas station.

Listen here you Neanderthal. As long as you compare everything to Brosis, all BBQ will fall short.
