I don't think everything in a state should be about football. I don't think a University should solely exist to field a football team.

The kids at Bama love Nick Saban. He isn't the monster you claim he is. He raises kids and turns them into champions in life and on the field. Smart wants to try it too, and Saban knows the potential he has. Quit being a pussy and Get on board.

Man...we're not talking about hiring the President of the University or a position on the Board...

...the position is Head Football Coach. That's about winning football games.

They fired Richt.

frick off with this complaining. If you can not support getting rid of an under performing coach you were never a fan of the school to begin with. Who fricking cares how nice a person Richt is. At the end of the day he under performed with the talent he had in a weak as frick East and got fired. (a few years to late IMO but yay for being better late than never)

The king is dead long live the king.

That's what I'm saying. Richt is an awesome guy, no one is denying that. But what I don't understand is how people don't think that another coach can't make an impact on some of these players? Richt isn't the only coach that makes these guys better people on and off the field. Saban does the same thing.... He just wins championships too.

Thoughts on Smart.....

Bad...
Uneasy a little about it, because of all the failures coordinators have had moving directly to P5 HC jobs with no HC experience. The trend is bad.

Good....
I like that Smart has been smart and waited till he felt he was ready to be a HC. He has turned down most opportunities to move for the sake of moving over the years, or take jobs that weren't the right fit. ( sound like anyone you know ) and if that patience and maturity turn out the same as it did with CMR , with renewed passion in the program, that's great news. I like he's a dawg, he's from Georgia, and this is possibly his dream job.

I think the hire will work out , I hope it does, for UGA and him. A lot of pressure coming back to your school, wearing your colors, and having dawg nation expecting so much!

Absolutely this. Saban is not the devil and Mark Richt is not the only coach to have an impact on young player's lives. Nick Saban has those former player stories too. In fact, I could probably throw a dart at a board filled with names of successful coaches and land on someone who had a positive impact on many players they coached. You don't get to be a leader of young men without having a positive affect on them (Bobby Petrino not withstanding )

doesn't sound like too much of a fan anyway if you could be easily swayed to pull for others based on if you respect them.

I'm a UGA fan. Whether richt is our coach or urban meyer. Whether we go 15-0 or 0-12. If our players read to elementary schools or if they rape and murder. Don't care. Sure I can like certain individuals with varying degree, but there is nothing, not one single thing at all whatsoever, that would make me not be a fan of the school.

People whining and complaining that richt is gone because of their respect for his character are ridiculous.

On board with this sentiment. It's fine if you don't want to be a Georgia fan because of this hire, but don't pretend like that's what you were before. If firing Richt and going after an Alabama coach makes you not want to watch, then guess what - you were a Richt fan and nothing more.

I'd say most of the names on that list turned out to be pretty good to us.

They have turned out well for the most part. It is also historical proof that expecting us to go get Jimbo or Dabo or Patterson or Shaw is just silly. Donnan is the only one we've ever hired, and we plucked him from Marshall.
