SI Preseason + Overrated/Underrated

This may have been posted before but I looked at the SI Rankings and saw all of the usual suspects like Notre Dame and MI State, then wondered if any list holds the prognosticators accountable. I found the Stassen over/under list (link) and thought it was interesting. Boise St. Is statistically the most underrated program and Texas is the most overrated
Sports Illustrated released their preseason College Football Top 25 for the 2015 season and eight teams from the SEC are ranked.
Ohio State landed at No. 1 just ahead of Auburn at No. 2. Alabama was the only other SEC team ranked in the the Top 10 at No. 5.
Here is the complete Sports Illustrated Preseason Top 25:

ND and LOLburn overrated for sure. But that always makes the fall more enjoyable
I don't mind our rankings. I would much rather see them earn it and climb in the ranks then have it handed to them, only to fall later

The Auburn thing blows my mind. Muschamp is a good DC and their new QB will be good, but #2 is just nuts.
Last year doesn't necessarily tell what happens this year, but it's worth considering what they've done lately. Here are their last four games against 1-A teams:
Loss to A&M at home
Blowout loss to UGA
Dominating loss to Bama
Loss vs. Wisconsin
They're gonna go 9-3 or 8-4 this regular season.

The Jeremy Johnson hype is completely over the top. Things we know about him:
1) He's tall.
2) He has a strong arm.
3) He's an ok athlete.
4) He played well for a half against an overmatched Arkansas team.
OMG Heisman candidate!!!!!
Eta: I imagine he'll do pretty well, but there are some people seriously predicting over 5000 total yards. That's an absurd expectation.

Exactly. If he's THAT good then Malzahn is a terrible coach. Auburn is going through a four game losing streak and Gus doesn't start a Heisman candidate sitting the bench?

I agree...the AU love us totally unfounded. Everyone talks about UGAs lack of experienced QB as why they are not ranked higher yet AU has a bench warmer coming in with practically no SEC experience and he is going to be a strength? Da frick?

I was listening to Danny Sheridan on Finebaum and he was saying how Auburn is going to lose at least 2 games simply because of their schedule. They play at LSU, where they haven't won in like 15 years. They also end their season w/ Arkansas, Ole Miss, Georgia, and Alabama w/ Idaho State mixed in. No chance they're able to get out of that unscathed and that's not even counting having Miss St at home earlier in the season.
They're grossly overrated and will lose 3-4 IMO.

I don't know if they're doomed to 3-4 losses, but I don't really see why they'd be ranked 2nd above some of the teams they're ranked in front of.
I'd probably have them ranked about the same as Georgia, tbh.

I see them losing to LSU, Georgia, and Alabama.
Navigating MSU, OM, and Arky will be tough. 2 of those are revenge games.

They will go 9-3. Take it to the bank.

Auburn should be top 10-15 but they are very overrated at #2. This doesn't even come close to Notre Dame being #4- now that is a fricking joke
I don't think Ole Miss will finish the season ranked either.

Ole Miss has a chance to be a very good team if they can get some stability from qb.

Probably too low. That's gonna be a great team and they'll prove it with a win over Oregon in week 2. There's a decent chance that MSU and OSU could be undefeated and ranked 1-2 when they play in November.

The biggest wild card out there. That's a loaded team that should win the Big 12 based on talent alone but have been underachieving lately.

They were 3-9 in 2012 and Malzahn took them to the title game in 2013. With a first year starter at QB that played DB at UGA. #2 with an improved defense isn't all that out of the question. Only two teams stopped Auburn's offense last year, not including the team that won the SEC. If Muschamp can make that defense even middle of the road in the SEC Auburn will be a team no one wants to play.

Their schedule is brutal and will be very tough to navigate.

TCU and Baylor wil keep Oklahoma from winning their conference. TCU is loaded and I think they have a great chance at winning it all this year.

Happens at least twice a year.

I don't think AU deserves to be at #2, but it's not because of this. Rankings are to represent how good a team currently is and what they have proven. Current rankings are not a predictor of final rankings. They do not take into account "remaining strength of schedule".
Say OSU had Bama, TCU, Oregon, UGA, FSU, and USC on its schedule this year. Would you bump them from 1 to NR because of that?

I mean, it depends on how the rankings are constructed. Some are formed based on the teams and where they are at the moment. Others are based on where they finish.
