Pretty solid article from Andy Staples LINK

quote:

Smart knows this, but long-term thinking is antithetical to The Process. The greatest challenge in the Alabamafication of Georgia's program is getting the Bulldogs to think the way the Crimson Tide players do. While Saban's skill at projecting and recruiting talent and then drawing up schemes ranks among the best in the game, his greatest gift is his ability to make a huge group of 18- to 22-year-olds perform consistently. He does this by making them forget the big picture exists. Instead, they concentrate solely on the next play, the next weight-room rep and the next English Composition paper. "The media is going to portray it as 'Are you going to win the SEC East? Are you going to win the national championship? Uh uh," Smart said. "We're worried about practice No. 10. Then we're worried about practice No. 11."

It means Georgia didn't change coaches—as most schools do—to win six or seven more games per season. The Bulldogs jettisoned Mark Richt and hired Smart to win two or three more games per year. Richt won 145 games in 15 seasons at Georgia. He didn't run the program into the ground. In his final campaign, his team went 10–3. These stats are not intended to suggest Georgia shouldn't have made a change, though. Richt, despite having possibly the biggest recruiting advantage in college football, hadn't won the SEC in 10 years and didn't seem to be getting the Bulldogs closer to a national title. Since SEC and national championships are comparatively reasonable expectations at Georgia, athletic director Greg McGarity made the change.

This is the most telling part of the story. Had Georgia won the UTk and Florida games we would have met Bama in Atlanta for a shot at the SEC and NC.
Improving from 5-7 to 10-2 would be much easier than from 10-2 to 11-1 or 12-0. Will the fans and AD give Smart the time to do that? More importantly, CAN he do it?
I hope he can.

That started before Smart even got there. It is a process, but will be for not if we do not clean up some systemic issues in the AD.

Richt ran the program like a family, Saban/Smart runs it like a machine.

Ironically the thing people hate most about Saban may be just what UGA needs. These players need to know that their teammates are chomping at their heals to take their spot on the depth chart if they screw up. Powerful motivation that we should be able to achieve.

The graduate transfer from Virginia was maligned, but the truth is most SEC coaches would be thrilled to have him on their roster.

Classic know-nothing Andy staples.

On their roster maybe, but how about as their starter? Give me a break.

They don't keep a stat for it or else Lambert would of set the record last year for number of gimme INTs thrown to defenders that proceeded to spazz out and drop the ball. He actually probably should have had more INTs last year than he had at Virginia.

If Lambert is the starter again, which it looks like he will be, is it possible for him to be that lucky again two years in a row?

I'm getting the fear.

I'm not at practices so I don't know shite other than what I read from reporters. But Kirby said no QB has separated himself from the others. All 3 will do something great to look to pull ahead, then something will happen to bring them back into the pack.

To me, this bodes very well for eason. With a new system everyone is starting from scratch with the plays and terminology so that wipes out one advantage GL/BR had. If they go into August all neck and neck with nothing much separating them...what sense would it make to start the Senior over the guy with waaay more upside and 4 years of eligibility?

Greyson may start. Hell Brice may start! But I'd guess that Eason will get LOTS of snaps against UNC.

Other than Kirby being an alumnus, pretty much why our admins hired an Alabama DC who has never been a HC. UGA football definitely needs more focus on the details/fundamentals including staying out of trouble on and off the field.
