Our ILB situation

I think that Floyd spends a lot of time at ILB this season and Smith probably takes the spot sooner rather than later. Kimbrough is just too much of a liability in pass defense. On the TD pass over the middle, we had the perfect defense called but Kimbrough lacked the speed and athleticism to properly cover his zone. Honestly, if Smith was in during that situation, the ball is never thrown or Smith would pick/deflect it.
The down side is that, while Floyd/Smith/Patrick at ILB would make us more athletic, we would lose some "thump" in defending the run. The DL would have to really man-up.

Ganus and Floyd at ILB is the way to go.

Kimbrough is a run stopper, and ULM throws it most of the time. He'll be needed for a lot of SEC ball games.
Jake Ganus isn't the most athletic guy in the world, either. I think Reggie Carter returning should improve the unit a lot. He can run pretty well. If Smith and Floyd can contribute, there shouldn't be too much to worry about IMO.

Ganus looked really solid out there. Kimbrough is outstanding against the run but, you're right, a liability against the pass. Keep in mind we get Reggie Carter back next week and he is arguably our best pass-covering ILB.

What do you think the possibility is of changing the personnel to suit the situation? Having Kimbrough in there at ILB on 1st and 2nd down and the other guys on passing downs? I would hate to lose Floyd's pass rushing from the outside on passing downs, but Lorenzo can make that up and we could possibly send Floyd up the middle on passing downs to change things up a bit.

That second TD was painful to watch.

The problem is that the ability to sub on defense isn't a given with so many teams using faster tempo now.

I didn't get to see the second TD but had heard it was in part a busted assignment by Mauger. Anyone know?

Just looked like Kimbrough didn't get there in time to me. It's hard to know as a fan though.

All I know is what I saw. Pruitt met Mauger when he came off the field and walked him down the sidelines preaching the whole way.

Kimbrough got beat on the first TD. Dude caught the ball right behind his head. On the second, looked to me like McGraw was in man to man and Mauger was supposed to help over the top, but instead went the other way. Hard to tell from the tv camera view though.

I actually meant the first TD. Got them mixed up. My bad

Ceaser sliced up the whole defense. Kimbrough is needed in run support. He is the only true enforcer when it's time to go head to head.

I think someone was supposed to have the deep third....

As long as there is football being played, receivers will burn MLBers on pass plays. It is known.

Leonard looked like Alec against the run at ILB... Good move

Certainly was the case last year vs USCe...Wilson and Herrera were getting smoked ALL game long down the middle.
