I am thinking about going to Savannah pretty soon as a getaway trip with the lady.
Any tips on where to stay or eat or things to check out?

Lew has always been very vocal and adamant about accepting all visitors to savannah at his place.

Great romantic place to take your wife.
Mansion on Forsyth Park looks good and goes for about $179 a night.
Olde harbor Inn, River Street goes for about $150 a night. River Street has a lot of shops and good restaurants nearby.
For something a little less expensive but doesn't have the historical feel there is Homewood Suites by Hilton Savannah Historic District/Riverfront that goes for about $120 a night.
Eating?
The Pirates House is good food with cornbread that is out of this world.
There is another fancier restaurant right next door to the Pirate's House (I can't remember the name but it is something like 521 House(?) or something like that)
Check out TripAdvisor. I can usually get some pretty good ideas from there. It's been a long time since I have been to Savannah, but loved it when we went.

If you want to do the downtown/romantic thing, stay in downtown Savannah. If you are looking for a beach trip, I'd slide down to Saint Simons.
As far as downtown goes, stay away from the Pirates House and River Street. They are both tourist traps. You might want to walk down River Street once just to see it. Most of the best action is in City Market where the locals hang out. Also, the Mansion is kind of a hike from everything except Forsyth Park.
Hotels: The Kehoe House, The Cotton Sail, The Bohemian, The Marshall House, or Andaz. The Westin is nice but it's across the river (still easy to get back and forth) and has a great view of downtown Savannah that a lot of people don't get to see.
Restaurants: Alligator Soul, The Olde Pink House, Mrs. Wilkes (Closed on weekends), Vic's on the River, Crystal Beer Parlor, Jazz'd. Garibaldi's, Circa 1875, B. Matthew's (your wife will love this place for brunch), 17Hundred90, Corleone's, B&D Burgers (great sports bar and fantastic burgers), and The Public.
Bars: Rock's on the Roof, Top Deck, The Distillery, Churchill's, Molly MacPherson's, Jen's and Friends, Treylor Park (good food too), Circa (also in the restaurnat list), Savannah Smiles (if y'all are way fricked up and like dueling piano bars), Chive (not a big fan of the food but kind of a neat bar), Sorry Charlies, Kevin Barry's, and Six Pence.

I've heard great things about the Pirate House, plan on doing a good bit of sightseeing for the most part.
Are there any places to avoid?

As long as you are in the Historic District you should be fairly safe. Avoid Paula Deen's place. Also avoid the Pirate's House unless you have kids in tow.

Do NOT eat the chicken salad unless you bring several changes of shorts.

If I stay at the Westin, how bad will parking be close to River St.?

I may be misunderstanding your question but when I have stayed at the Westin we just took a water taxi to River Street. I assume they still do that but its been a while.

Parking is pretty easy, but they have a ferry that runs back and forth often that I believe is free.

Thank you to everyone. I will try not to get too wasted and whiz in the river.

If it were not for drunkard piss the Savannah river would have run dry years ago. Its not as if we rednecks upstream get out of the fishing boats to hunt a restroom.
Joking aside, it's a fun town. Enjoy.

That reminds me. You need to swing by Wet Willie's to get at least one Call-A-Cab while on River Street.

That's how I always start my nights downtown. Whatever happens after that is fair game.
OP, I don't know if you know or not, but you can walk around with alcohol so long as it's in a clear plastic cup. Most bars will provide you with one when leaving.
