I play a lot of Blues on the guitar but have never touched a slide. I purchased a chrome slide but I am curious about any tips that may be helpful from those with experince.

Duane Allman (1946–1971) of The Allman Brothers Band began using an empty glass Coricidin bottle as a guitar slide, finding it to be just the right size and shape for this purpose.

Duane said the Coricidin bottle improved tone.

Played with a guy that used a test tube as a slide. Fit his finger, was just the right width, and he filed the end down a bit and it worked great for him.

I think it is easier in open tuning, but I am not very good at it. The chrome or glass slides are the best, but it comes down to feel.

I have been using open e tuning. I think my action is to low though so I may have to buy a Epiphone to play with the slide.

That makes it harder, but I think you can get used to it. You can certainly do more with a Dorbro, but then you own another guitar.

I love the sound of the slide but I had the action lowered on my Fender Parlor guitar and I am getting a lot of screeching. I might go buy a cheap Epiphone for about a hundred bucks and practice on it. I like the open e tuning as well but I am having to learn the scales all over again.

Plus, it's easier to have one in open tuning around.

I like the open tuning I just have to adapt to the new scale positions. It helps though to be able to throw some licks in with a bar chord.
