I've never been much of a music guy but lately have been wanting to start building a good music library on my phone to play in the car or push through Bluetooth to a mobile speaker. Some of you guys obviously have a lot of music so I figured you could save me some trouble.

I don't have shite for CD's so I'm looking at downloading everything. Is there some secret way/method for for downloading music or do I just need to start pulling songs I like for $1 each on iTunes? I'm not much of a hacker so some deep web torrent may be more than I can manage. Do I leech everything I can from my friends? Is this even possible?

I have an Iphone6 and an iPad so whatever I do will need to be compatible. TIA.

Cmon man. Utorrent takes about 15 seconds to download. Then you go to kickass or demonoid and search for whatever you want. Its literally 3rd grade stuff. And you can build a library that consumes all the memory on your phone and iPad in days

The easiest way that I know to download free music would be to use a YouTube to MP3 converter but it's pretty time consuming especially since you are basically starting from scratch. (www.YouTube-MP3.org then just copy and paste YouTube video url)

Another way you could try would be to use the Spotify app. Right now it's only .99 cents per month for the summer and then goes to $10 a month for unlimited music and no advertisements. I would recommend going this route since you don't have much of a music library as it is, however the only downside is that you cannot burn these songs to a CD. You can download songs to the app so you can listen to them when you are not on wifi so you don't have to use cellular data. If you want to try it out before you buy the app then go to spotify.com on your computer to download the computer version. (It's free just has advertisements)

Youtube mp3 conversion is what I do since I mainly listen to a lot of EDM type stuff.

If you do bother to torrent music, don't use utorrent - it's riddled with adware. Use a client like deluege instead.

Do it legally. Period. iTunes is good. Not the cheapest, though.

If you want good, cheap and legal - try MP3va.com

Legal as frick and a huge library, only .10 a song.

But whatever you do, keep it legal. Always.

I think buying from Amazon is better than buying from Apple. Apple was notorious for selling songs with DRM that restricted your rights to play on any device. Amazon competed well by offering digital downloads of music encoded with higher bitrates and no DRM.

Things might have changed without me knowing about it because I always buy physical CDs and then rip to files and folders. I like Amazon's used CDs which are functionally no different from new.

Most of my listening comes from tuning to internet radio stations like Radio Paradise and RootsRadio.BE.

I always download to a desk computer hard drive and then make either MP3 or just put it on a thumb drive.

Which system would be best for that and the cheapest too?

I use Rhapsody (same concept as Spotify) and something called Replay Music (paid) that records the songs as they stream on my PC and creates MP3s. Probably not legal, but not...as...illegal as torrents

Replay Music automatically names and tags the songs as it goes. I'd say it gets it right 90% of the time. I can queue up hours of songs, hit record, and walk away. When I get back, I've got a couple hundred MP3s sitting there.

Better quality than YouTube to MP3, easier to find songs, queue them up, auto tagging, etc. Been doing this for years.

Ive been dl'ing movies and music for 10+ yrs without a single issue. No virus, no notice, nothing. I mean, you can listen to all this shite for free on youtube, rhapsody, spotify, pandora, etc. Whats the big deal if you store it on your device for a bit while you listen? As has been said you can convert free YouTube videos into MP3s easily. It just takes longer

Its like internet gambling. It illegal and all, but..ok? they make an example out of one person out of tens of millions every couple yrs to show they're paying attention. Its more likely that a piano will fall on you randomly

Just download the shite. calling it unethical is semantic bullshite. I support the music industry in alot of other ways. Im not paying for shite most people are listening to for free. To "own" it lol

Thanks for the input everyone! I guess the real decision is whether I want to have all the music myself vs. access it through a 3rd party for a monthly charge. Also...how much time do I want to spend with it...

I don't know if I'll even care enough to justify paying $10/mth ...I can usually just listen to Pandora and am pretty cheap by nature. Again..it may sound weird to some of you but I just don't spend a bunch of time reviewing or listening to music.

Thanks!

You can still use Spotify for free too. But, you"ll get commercials and won't have access to all the features. $10/month to have access to the entire record store is about the greatest bargain going right now though imo...

Squatch, You need to ask for a wireless bluetooth speaker like a Jawbone Jambox for Father's Day. It will change your life even if you're not big into music. Play talk radio or podcasts or books or whatever while you shite/shower/shave, exercise, etc, or the other boring tedious parts of life. It's game-changer.

A few things have happened that have triggered my question...one of which was using a friend's portable speaker at the beach and backyard bonfires. That was a game changer indeed... I'm looking at one of the little Bose boxes right now.

But Pandora is so random and repetitive I wanted to get a little more control over what we were listening to.

Also, I discovered the value of a good set of noise reduction headphones on long flights...and found that listening to talk only media on driving trips isn't as relaxing as having music in the background.

Let's just say I'm trying to get reaquainted with my artistic side....

Spotify or Google Play if you prefer to do it legally. Torrents if you're feeling ballsy.

Any music you already own can sync with spotify our GP, if you choose to go that route.

I've used both and while I like GP better than Spotify, either one is a massive upgrade over iTunes. I mean, who still uses iTunes anyway? It's like having an aol email address. I know there are people out there who still use it but they're weirdos.

Google creeps me out though.

They're probably building a personality profile on you based on what time of day you listen to certain songs......which they then sell to the Ministry of Homeland Security..
