Being a school with a well known and much loved live mascot ourselves, I think we can sympathize. Can't deny having a live tiger as a mascot is pretty badass.

Sympathies for the LSU nation.

That is tough. As a kid I was a LSU fan, big time, and Mike the Tiger was on another plane.

I know I will take a lot of heat, but he is still my favorite mascot.

You mean Dr. Franken-Seiler's creation isn't the greatest mascot ever? Blasphemy.

Something about a live tiger, i guess. As a kid my parents used to take me to LSU to see Mike the Tiger. It's probably more memories than anything.

I sympathize, but I'm not sure a tiger should be a mascot.

Why not? That Tiger is treated better than any Tiger in a zoo, and lives like a king. Plus, LSU usually gets a Tiger that is a rescue tiger...one that could not survive in the wild. (Or at least, that is the plan for the replacement)

I understand why you think that, but I believe (at least in the case of Mike) it's based on a lack of facts/understanding surrounding how and why those tigers get there.

Yep. My thinking exactly. The tigers are treated better than UGA is, I can assure you. However, the sentiment is probably that a tiger is a wild animal as opposed to a domesticated dog. I understand the thinking, but the tiger would probably die shortly after being released into the wild. he is, essentially being kept in a very, very fancy zoo.

I fully understand the animal is extremely well taken care of, but this is a tiger. Having said that, I'm not upset enough about it to argue too much over.

Nah. No arguing about this.

Correct. Typically a tiger that isn't viable on its own in the wild. This being one of a couple of options a tiger would then have in order to survive.....it's not a bad gig.

Currently, my favorite cat, Mr. Claw, is sick. I am afraid he is going to die too.

Actually, I wish Georgia would use an American bulldog instead of a British Bulldog.

American bulldogs are real good watchdogs that historically defended homesteads from bears and Indians.

That sucks what a great mascot at least he doesn't have to fear those firework shows anymore.

So everyone knows, the above is true. LSU isn't grabbing some Tiger in Africa. They get ones born in captivity who would die within days if released in the wild.

Anyone who is against LSU having a live Tiger must be against all zoo's. Mike lived 11 years. Most Tiger's in the wild live around 7.

RIP Mike
