Hey y'all. Was on my way to see my girlfriend up in North Carolina until she comes back to UGA in the Fall. The water pump burst on my 2001 Lexus RX 300 that I've had for about 1.5 years. After examination, the damage caused to the timing belt and engine renders the vehicle useless.

So I'm basically looking for a new car later this week back in GA. Y'all got any nonstandard advice on finding a new car? Probably going to look at getting something new ('12+). Looking at Altimas, Mazda 6s and so on.

VW Jetta Sportswagen TDI. My wife drives one and it won me over, big time. Enough cargo room for golf clubs or my hiking pack or a tailgate kit, really nice interior and features, plus we get about 650 miles to the tank on the hwy and around 450 in town. We bought it in 2013 when it was a couple of years old and have 62k on it right now (bought it with 19k) and everything is running great with regular, standard maintenance. All in all, it's been awesome and in a few years we'll likely upgrade to a newer model.

If you want to take it on dirt roads, the clearance is shite, so avoid that. She has to take my truck when she heads to the barn.

If you need a car...I recommend you go Japanese. Also make sure it has the hooks on the bottom from being shipped over....you don't want one assembled by a bunch of union guys in TN or somewhere.

I've had good luck with Lexus, Toyota, Honda and Nissan. I would shy away from infinity. I have a 2007 ES350 I picked up 4 yrs ago and it just hit 150k miles and is still running like a top. Also - I'm personally still skeptical about hybrids if you're looking to pile on the miles because that tech still seems to be evolving.

Buy something coming off a lease with 20k to 30k miles....those seem to be the best deals I've seen. I drive a lot for work and getting 200k plus miles is the goal without having major work done.

Same thing, bro.

For the record, if you want longevity with minimal upkeep, stay away from anything with a turbo. They're great for short-term ownership, but they are not going to be good for the long haul.

Personally just bought a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with the tech package and panoramic roof in February and got a great deal (sub-$17,000 with a retail value of $22,900). Been extremely happy with the purchase thus far.

My wife wanted a new car that was a bit of a beast. Got her a Nissan Xterra. Very rugged SUV with Japanese dependability on a truck frame. Useful for a lot of different things. She loves it (and so do I).

Just a thought.

I know...but they're not. Myself and a couple of othersiknow had great experiences with a Nissan followed up by issues with Infinity's...don't know why but it's true. Maybe bad luck..

Did you really think I didn't know they were made by the same company?

I went through the car buying process in March and I found this to be, shockingly, not true.

It has been true in the past, but not in March 2015.

I ended up going brand new with a 2015 because all the 12's,13's, were only discounted about $2k off the brand new. And with factory incentives, there seemed to be no benefit to getting a slightly older one.

In conversation, my MIL discovered the same thing when she bought her new car last year.

Something strange going on with the car business.

Or just two isolated anecdotal accounts that are meaningless.

By the way triplebrass, god is trying to tell you to break up with her. Let her be. Let her have a summer fling back home. She's young. You only live once. Don't smother her.

Triple Brass,

Go see Bo at Akins Ford Jeep Chrysler in Winder, if you have a 700+ credit score. They won't even look at your income/paystubs. Tell them you work for Vandelay Industries and make $200k a year.

Bo will put you in something real nice. Huge selection.

I've bought about 12 different vehicles in the last 17 years, and no one has EVER asked to see a paystub or other proof of income. Not one dealer. I literally could have told them 200k and they'd have never thought any different on it. Mortgages, yes. Cars, no.

Has anyone ever asked you to see something like this?

USAA in 2003 for a used Oldsmobile, I had a 713 equifax score.

And again in 2012, also USAA, I didn't check me score first, so I couldn't tell you exactly what it was.

Maybe it's just a USAA thing?

This last time I just went through the dealer.

Didn't know, but I've come across enough people that weren't aware of this that I now consider it to not be "common knowledge".

Coincidentally, I've had two new Sentras (an SE-R and SR/2003 and 2012) and BOTH of them had horridly squealy brakes. Nothing wrong with the brakes, pads were new.....but even replacing with new OEM pads wouldn't fix it. Never had any issues with the cars, just that very annoying sound. Finally got so annoyed I traded the last one in for my Santa Fe Sport now and couldn't be happier.

Could be. I've gone through a local credit union several times and I don't think it was ever an issue. But it very well could be with USAA. Did the dealer ask to see anything like that? I'm really just curious since it's the first I've heard of it. I need to know if I should avoid saying 200k next time around.....

I don't care if someone's asking for stubs, I make enough to cover payments, but I'm not about to get a pricy sports car. I've got a couple family hookups at certain dealers. I'll probably be looking at what Hennessey Mazda has to offer, along with the Nissan dealership in Roswell. Maybe a few other places.

No insane need for an SUV v Sedan. I've liked the space on my Lexus, but I could get better fuel economy on a smaller car.

It's either going to be a new car or recent lease. Prices will depend on what I ate for breakfast and which way the wind is blowing, I'm sure.

Depending on financing, I'm comfortable putting up to ~2500 down with payments up to 300/move or so.

Best formula for buying a car for me has been anything w/ an original sticker price of $40k & less than 100k miles with a price around $15,000

New cars ($20k - $30k) are not good, IMO - bought my wife a 2014 Acadia and it drives like an underpowered mini Van

Looking at Mazda & Nissan are smart choices - Mazda 3 Speed is cool and the Maxima can blow the doors off about any car on the street, most in the 20MPG range & fun to drive & high octane category are good value
